Media center takes control of all audio?

Hi guys,
I often have media center open to watch tv and while waiting for a specific tv show I like to open up youtube, wmp, itunes or whatever.
The problem is if I mute the sound on media center to listen to other stuff, every other player mutes too. This only happens when media center is involved, if I have other players open and do the same the other players work. Is there something that I can do to avoid this problem?

click the sound icon then goto mixer and mute it there

But isn't there a registry tweak or something that makes media center work like other players?
