Media center tv video error

I rarely used TV watching with Media center in the past but since I moved the pc in the basement, it would be very usefull. Last time I watched tv on my pc was maybe last month and everything was running fine. Since then, I don't recall installing any new software or changing any settings. Presently if I try watching live tv or even watch previously recorded tv program all I get is: video error, Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer.

Of course I tried both but nothing has changed.I tried doing a tv set up but nothing's seems working.

Running W7 x64

Any suggestion?

ok, I know this sounds crazy but if you have tried the basics like updating graphics drivers and are still having issues try disabling sounds effects in media center.

I had the exact same issue you described and it fixed it!

It's a glitch that is affecting lots of people that Microsoft has not patched yet.

I have resolve my issue by loading a previous ghost that I made. Not the perfect solution since I don't even know what went wrong but my search for solution on the net came often as a sound related problem. Different speakers config between media center and your sound hardware seems to cause this problem in more than one occasion. Pop up telling you it's a video problem while it's completely another thing.

I miss so much XP. Never had any issue for the time it was my OS. W7 has more bell and whistle but it comes with too many unsolved glitches for my taste.

I had the same error occur and was able to fix it by running windows media center as an administrator; by right clicking on windows media center in the "all programs" menu and "run as administrator"

I am not sure why this would work since I am logged in as an administrator......Can anyone explain why this should occur?

I have the live tv video error. Running Win 7 x32. I have tried the solutions posted on this thread without any success. I tried uninstalling MC and reinstalling. I ran SFC /SANNOW which didn't find any issues. When I click on live TV the tv picture comes on for an instant and then the error message appears - video error, Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer. I have tried two different TV cards (currently using HD Homerun HDHR3), two different video cards, reinstalled video drivers and still no luck. My next option, I think, is to do a repair reinstall of Win 7. Any other solutions out there?

I had the same problem after swapping out a conventional HD to an SSD. Upon checking device manager it said something along the lines of a default graphics card.

I googled the problem I was having and came across a thread where I had to update the driver by forcing Windows 7 to the folder that had the correct driver a .inf file.

The default searches within the utility would not use it.

I will look for that thread if you have not resolved it.

Found it. This worked for me:

"Can you see BIOS post screen ? If you can, then your gfx card installation is good.

Do you have Display Adapter and Standard (Generic) VGA card entry in Device Manager under Display Adapter ?

You should have this entry. Then you can follow this procedure to insall your VGA card drivers: When you tried to install Ati CCC, the big .exe file created a folder in C:\, your boot drive, named Ati or AMD. In this folder is another folder named Support. In this folder there may be another folder or Ati CCC installation files and folders. Here there is a folder named Packages. In Packages you have Drivers folder. In Drivers folder you have Display folder. In Display folder you have another folder W76A_INF or a similar name. This is the folder that contains actual Display Drivers. Please note the name and path of this folder.

Now go to Device Manager\Display Adapter\Standard(Generic) VGA card. You should use Update drivers method and show the path to the folder you have noted above.

This will install the drivers for your gfx card. Now you can reinstall Ati CCC 10.8 to install Catalyst Control Center.

Starting with CCC 10.4, I have always received an error message for my Ati Radeon HD5770 that the INF FILE WAS NOT FOUND and driver installation failed. Since then, I have been using this method to install CCC. It was the same for CCC 10.5, CCC 10.6, CCC 10.7 and CCC 10.8. Prior to CCC 10.4, when I clicked the big .exe file (about 70 MB), Ati drivers and catalyst control center installed properly.

Thank you Magua. I will attempt this suggestion to see if it helps me. I have Win 8 and WMC on my MacBook and live TV works fine on that setup. Unfortunately that is not my home theater computer. Also kinda strange is that I can watch Netflix on WMC no problem,,,,just live TV won't work. I will post results after I try this tomorrow.

Try this:
From windows desktop
Click Start
Open Control Panel
Open Sound
If using HDMI select your HDMI connection in the list click the Configure button
Set Windows sounds to 2.0 (stereo). Test, Save and Exit Sounds and Control Panel.

Open Media Center
Open Tasks/Settings on the MC main Menu
select General
select Windows Media Center Setup
select Setup your Speakers
Click Next, Select the HDMI connection, then next
Set up your desired speaker configuration here either 5.1 or 7.1 depending on your setup at home.. Test, Save and Exit back to the Media Center Main Menu
Exit Media Center
Reopen Media Center and try watching TV.
There is a weird bug in MC that if you have Windows sounds set to 5.1 and Media Center set to 5.1 you can sometimes get this error. Setting Windows to Stereo usually allows it to bypass the bug.
This error has been around for a long time even pre-SP1..

The other workaround is to disable navigation sounds for media center.

Yes, I know this is a very old thread. Nonetheless, I have not seen this solution anywhere else and wanted to share it and this seemed a logical choice. Mods, feel free to move it or give me direction.

I tried everything in this thread and it did not solve my problem getting this error message when trying to play recorded TV. It went on for over a year with sporadic attempts to solve it. No luck. Really frustrating!

I used to have to restart my PC to get recorded TV to play, not just WMC. If I turned off my TV, without fail the problem came back when trying to play recorded TV. If my TV stayed on, the problem did not occur. I understand this might be a little different than the OP, but the error message was the same -- so maybe somebody like me looking for a solution will see this and it may help in some cases.

For me, this was the solution: I put a new battery in my motherboard. And the problem went away. I couldn't believe it, so I put the old battery back. The error message came back right away. Put the new one in again, and it went away right away.
