FixWin is not the best tool out there. You can extract the FixWin executable file and put it on the Desktop. From there, right click and and Run as Administrator. See if it works better that way.

Even those fixes are not related to your problem, there's no harm in trying and seeing if there are any effects. There's also FixWMP, not guaranteed to do anything though but no harm in trying:

You can also try System File Checker by going to the Run command, typing cmd, then type sfc /scannow on the command prompt. It can repair corrupt system files but will however take off custom theming that were not built in features in Windows 7.

Let's go on what should have been our first step - my fault. Windows 7 orb > type "default programs" without quotes into the search bar. Right click on "Default Programs" and run it as administrator. Click "Set Default Programs" > Windows Media Player. Check just above "set this program as default" if the message is "this program has 70 to 70 ( ... )". If no match "70 to 70", click "Set this program as default" and confirm if necessary. This walkthrough can be viewed below.

it has 68 of 70 defaults i changed the avi and mp3 defaults to other programmes.

Before continuing:

I recommend calm and careful execution of the process below.

Create a folder on your desktop and name it "backup". Now go to the Windows Orb > type "regedit" without quotes and hit enter. When prompted click Yes. In the regedit window, click "edit " and scroll down to "find ". Copy and paste

in find window and hit enter. Wait for the process. When found the registry key, it will be in light shade of blue. Right click on it and "export". Save it in the backup folder you created on your desktop under the name

VIDEO__X_MS_WMV Moniker Class

Now, still in the regedit window, press Ctrl + F. Copy and paste the following

{CD3AFA88-B84F-48F0-9393-7EDC34128127}

and hit enter. Right click and save it under name

VIDEO__AVI Moniker Class

and also in the backup folder. Close regedit. Now go to the folder Widows > System32 and find the

wmp.dll

Copy it and paste it into the backup folder. Let me know when you're ready.

back, did what you said but got error message:

cannot import c:\user/name/desktop/wmvaviregkeys\video_avi moniker class reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes.
