Meet the Russian-made tool that grabs nude selfies from iCloud account

There’s a seedy trade in compromising photos stored in Apple iCloud accounts, and it is in part aided by a software program that cleanly collects the data.

Some of the nude celebrity photos are believed to have first been circulated on Anon-IB, a definitely not safe-for-work forum. As reported by Wired, the forum is full of offers for iCloud “ripping,” or downloading the entire contents of an account.

The software tool they’re using is Moscow-based Elcomsoft’s Phone Password Breaker, or EPPB, one of many forensic tools the company develops for law enforcement and other clients.

It is due to the fact that most people do not understand that there photos when taken are auto added to icloud. That is why. Apple doesn't make it very clear.

The average user doesn't even know where "settings" is. Or what a setting means. They just "want it to work". As apple has instructed them.

What people using phones to upload photos also don't seem to realize is that those photos reveal geographic location:

Yea well it's a fact of life just because someone has a device doesn't mean they know jack about it or what's on it
But these settings are clear as day and I believe icloud does nothing unless activated and even then it asks what you want to sync there

Just like how ignorance doesn't excuse people from breaking the law, ignorance of how computers (smartphones are computers) and the internet work should not excuse the people who had their nudes leaked from blame.

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s when I first got into the internet experience, the first thing I learned was that the internet was a public place and that publication of any personal information was a cardinal sin and taboo. Even my feeble 12-year old mind could understand the concept of keeping your personal information private. A/S/L? Anyone who asked that was a creepy predator, and anyone who seriously answered that was either naive or very stupid.

Nowadays with the advent of MySpace (RIP), Facebook, and Twitter, it's become commonplace for everyone and their dog to publically publish their personal information without any second thought. Whether that be something as relatively mundane as your name, to something as personal as wedding reception photos, or in this particular case even nudes.

It boggles my mind how things changed so drastically for the worse in such a short span of time. We were going about educating people, both young and old, about the dangers of publishing personal information during the haydays of the internet. And yet ultimately, people apparently don't give two craps about their personal privacy until JLaw's boobs are shown. It boggles my mind and it is almost rage-inducing at just how stupid people are.

@ king I completely agree.

I hate when people give the excuse they do not know any better. If you do not know the basics, stay away from it. Seriously. You do not drive a car without getting a license and knowing the basics of how to properly drive and how the car in a basic form functions. You also need to know about Maintenance like oil changes etc. Not saying everyone needs to know how to do an oil change, but at the very least know it needs done.

The other thing is, so many people are even to the point where they do not even think to use a search engine to ask their question or problem.

There is no reason people have to be dumb with technology. They just choose to be. My fiance's mom is that kind of person. No matter how many times I speak about best practices etc. they ignore it. She is the kind of person who uses passwords like "google" or "password". Sigh* Some people will not learn until something bad happens to them.

Is it bad to wish something bad so they can learn there lesson? ugh.

Like I keep saying, there needs to be a tech license of some sort lol.

I'll wager that the people who had their nudes leaked are still taking nudes on their potatophones and uploading them onto the internet.

The question is, when will those get haxx0red so history can repeat itself in full? :devil:
