I have 4GB of memory in my computer and for some reason if I leave My computer on for the day when I get home in the afternoon the memory usage is up at 60-90% and my computer starts getting really Laggy and slow. :( Then I have to turn it off and after a restart its fine for the rest of the day. I am very careful and only install programs I can trust so I'm guessing its a bug somewhere?

I have Eset smart security installed

Hope someone can help :)

Thanks

ah ok thanks I'll try that and see if it helps. Is there supposed to be so many svchost.exe Processes?

That screenshot looks normal, apart from the abnormally high RAM usage.

The offending culprit appears to be hiding.

Download Process Explorer and under view > select columns select all the available memory monitoring options.

Hopefully it will show what taskmanager/resource monitor does not.

In short Yes: That may be because of FireFox accessing the network (i.e. connected to the internet)

I checked using process manager and nothing seems to be different. My ram usage seems to of gone down to 49% now which includes Java that I newly opened which is taking up a huge 300MB of ram!

I'd keep an eye on that Java instance. If it's @ 300mb for a newly created process, then whatever is utilising Java maybe the source of the memory leak.

Do you Facebook by any chance?

Have many add-ons for FF?

FF aside, are you using Java for anything else?

Yeah I use facebook occasionally

the firefox addons I have are

AdBlock Plus
AutoPager
add to search bar
Firebug
Flashgot
GreaseMonkey
Personas
Skip Screen
SpellBound
User Agent Switcher

But I doubt any of those addons are the problems as none of them are newly installed and this problem only started happening a couple of days ago. I also have not installed any new programs recently.

No I dont use java for anything else that I can think of.

I dont usually put my computer to sleep as I normally leave downloads going when I'm out.

Just some long shot thinking here:

Have you recently started playing Mafia Wars or any of the other games while on Facebook? They use Java and are notorious RAM hogs.

Even though the add-ons may have been installed for a while, have any been updated recently?

If they have, and are Java based, they may have introduced a memory leak bug.

As a test, it may be worthwhile temporarily disabling them (except adblock plus, I know that one is fine) to see if it has any impact on this leak.

Eset causes this memory leak problem on quite a few different systems for some reason. This fact has already panned out for me many times in the past. You will need to uninstall Eset to fix this problem. :)

I posted the following to another thread, but will repost it here...

The issue with ekrn.exe taking up processor time is a known issue and is being worked on for the last several years. They still have not fixed it?

NOD32 is a good antivirus when it works, it does it's job very well,, the problem has come from quality over recent years and the crippling of certain features of the OS when the license lapses.

These are the main reasons I no longer recommend NOD32. Save some money and get MSE.

This could also affect RAM, but I have not really ever paid attention to that in the past as the focus was on the process itself. But could very well be related.

I have had eset smart security installed for over a year and have had no problems until a couple of days ago. Also Taskmanager shows that the amount of RAM/CPU that is being used by eset components is quite low even when this problem is happening.

Download Malwarebytes Antimalware and do a full scan in safe mode. If nothing is found, there is a program called CleanMem that is different from other memory cleaning programs that just force the memory to the page file. This uses the Windows engine that clears stored ram when starting your computer or when your computer comes out of sleep mode. It runs silently in the background and has a 32 and 64 bit built in and you choose which to install when you install the program. I use it and memory leaks are a thing of the past for me. I don't even know the program is running. This is not like other "RAM cleaners". This actually deletes unused saved ram that processes store in the memory for quick access. I have not seen any slowdown in my computer since using this and it does exactly what it says it does. You can get it here: CleanMem v.1.5.0 | PcWinTech.com™

Malwarebytes didn't find anything and CleanMem didn't work. The problem is/was firefox. I just have to remember to exit firefox before leaving my computer alone for a while.
