I have 8 GiGs of Memory and only 3.5 GIGS Register. Why doesn't all 8 GiGs show up? I know Windows requires at least a GIG. Thanks.

I'm going to go with the fact you are running a 32bit system and the max it can handle is 3.5!!

You need 64bit or Linux to use all 8!!

You’re currently running a 32bit operating system therefore you will only be able to use just under 4gigs of Ram. 64bit operating systems basically have no limit to how much Ram is used.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/86886-32-bit-vs-64-bit-comparison.html

-A 32 bit OS can only address 4Gb of memory. Some of this is then allocated to hardware devices, usually dropping the available RAM to 3.25Gb or 3.5 Gb.
-The addressable space also applies to programs, giving a 2Gb limit of RAM to any one process. This means that 32 bit Photoshop can only ever access up to 2Gbs of RAM.
-Drivers are always a concern. Drivers for hardware usually have a 32 bit version, and there is usually not a problem with 32 bit drivers (finding or using).
-A 32 bit OS has a lower memory requirement to run. For Windows 7, the minimum RAM needed is 1Gb

You only have a 32 BIT system, it can not use more than 4 Gbytes, total.

Not strictly true, it's limited depending on which version of Windows you're running.

Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)

Win7 Pro, Enterprise, and Ultimate are limited to 192GB
Win7 Home Premium is limited to 16GB
Win7 Home Basic is limited to 8GB
Win7 Starter is limited to 2GB

Windows Server 2008 R2 is limited to 2 TB :)

You assume we all run windows.....

Well, it IS a Windows 7 forum after all... :p

The important point is that you can be far from unlimited even if you're running 64-bit. A 64-bit W7 Home Premium install is limited to 16GB for example.

it is false about 32 bit system having a limit of 4 GB.
Memory Limits for Windows Releases (Windows)

if you go to this website, and look at x86 of windows server 2008 datacenter, it can support up to 64 GB

x86 is 32 bit computer

so, if you want to use more than 4GB memory, and dont really care about money (you want software compatibility)
go for windows server 2008 datacenter or one of those high memory limit

Windows xp x86
They of course qualify it: "Limits greater than 4 GB for 32-bit Windows assume that PAE is enabled."

PAE is not available on consumer Windows installs. Therefore, the 4GB limitation holds for consumer versions of Windows. Saying you should get a data center Windows Server license is just ridiculous when you can just install 64-bit instead.

I love how these posts always descend into PAE arguments.
