Hi,

After having the BSOD numerous times I was told to run memtest86. After running it for 5 passes it came up with 37 errors but I have no idea what these errors mean and how to fix them.

If anyone could have a look at the attached photos and help me fix the crashes it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks.

It means either the ram or the slot in the mobo is bad (probably the ram). It should be under warranty.

Thanks ken, this is good news as I'd previously been told it could possibly my graphics card.

Is it defiantly 100% RAM related?

Thanks again for the quick and useful answer.

From the address it looks like the 1st 2gb stick is failing. To be sure you can swap the sticks and the error should move to address above the 2gb range. Sometimes, but not often, just removing and reinstalling the sticks will clear the problem if it wasn't seated just right.

Thanks for the reply Jim.
Ill swap the sticks tomorrow and then re-run the test.
When you say "the error should move to address above the 2gb range", do you mean where it says 238.7mb on the first error, it will say something over 2GB?

Are you overclocking? If so go back to default and re-run test. Also make sure your RAM is set to the correct voltage and timings. Some motherboards don't always set the correct timings or voltage as "Auto" would suggest, especially with performance RAM.

Example my MB (Intel D975) will not automatically set my Corsair RAM (PC8500) to its stated timing of 5-5-5-15 (would Auto set to 5-5-5-18) nor would it set the voltage setting to its stated 2.2v (would Auto set it to 1.8)

Just something to check before replacing the RAM.

We saw this issue alot over at the Corsair Forums where memtest would fail.

Just my two cents.

I haven't over-clocked anything.
I read on another forum to check the voltages and timings but I don't know how to do it or what the correct specs are for my RAM.

You can check the RAM sticks yourself to see if the information is stamped on them or you can visit the manufacturers website for the info.

As to how to set this, this is done through your BIOS. If you don't know how to check this or unfamiliar with the BIOS, then I'd leave well enough alone and find someone who does know how to check, and set this for you.

I can't help you with this since I'm unfamiliar with you MB and BIOS.

Sorry.

Thanks anyway.
Ill try what Jim suggested and if not then Ill look into changing the voltage and timings.
I'm fairly familiar with the BIOS but not really confident enough to start messing with voltages ect.

If you're familiar enough with the BIOS then I would at least check to see if the correct timings and voltage is set, at least you'll know if there's a problem.

Good luck

Ownedandout,
To learn more about your ram chips,

CPU-Z http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz/cpuz_153_setup.exe
Gathers info on your CPU, Motherboard, Memory, System
CPU: Name, number, Core stepping and process, Package, Core voltage
Internal and external clocks, clock multiplier, cache info
Mainboard: Vendor, model, revision, Bios model and date,
Chipset (northbridge and southbridge) and sensor
Graphic interface.
Memory: Frequency and timings, modules specification, vendor,
serial number, timings
System: Windows and DirectX version.

If you haven't messed around with memory and cpu settings, then 1st try to reseat memory chips if problem persists, then:
Memory chips are ridiculously cheap. To be honest when fixing a machine my time is more important than the cost of a couple of memory chips. Once you have known, good memory chips then if you want to experiment with swapping out chips you won't be set out of commission because you can always reinsert the good chips.

If the timings and voltage aren't correctly set by the MB, replacing the chips isn't going to fix the problem.

I would first insure the timings and voltage are correct. If so, then look at the memory sticks and so forth...

At any rate good luck to the OP on whichever route they choose.

Keep us informed.

Peace.

Hey,
I switched the sticks around and re-ran the test and by the second pass I already had 50 errors. The address was still under 2GB.

That is a little confusing but if you will look at the 2nd line from the top it shows it is testing from 2048 to 3328 so it is the 2nd stick. I assume the address is relative to what range it is testing. To be 100% just remove the 2nd stick and run the test on the good stick. Also you could just test each stick one at a time.

Hi again,
I ran a test using just 1 stick and it ran for 5 passes with no errors. I then switched that stick with the other one and I got an error almost immediately.

Does this pretty much mean that stick is broke?

Pretty much., did you put the second stick in the same slot as the first? If the ram is still under warranty I would send them both back since ram needs to be matched especially in 64 bit
