Mic not recognized, no sound

I have a built-in mic on an Inspiron 1521 laptop that does not work ever since I have installed Windows 7. I've been told it could be solved by installing drivers, but I'm not sure which drivers those would be. Also, I've looked at the settings and set one microphone as default, but it still wasn't recognizing the built-in mic at all. So if someone could please direct me to some drivers or give me some other kind of help, that would be appreciated. It's getting really annoying not being able to record anything for my podcast or talk to my international friends. >.<

You said you set the mic as default, but did you set it as default communication device too?

The problem is that it doesn't even recognize the mic. Like, it has a mic there to configure, but it's not actually my mic. I went onto Dell and tried to download the Sigmatel driver, but it kept giving me an error saying I had not selected anything to download, though I clearly had.

That's what it looks like. That's not my mic. So that would be why it doesn't work.

How do I do that? And that's not what my mic was before. It actually says built-in or sigmatel, or something.

I did that, and it disabled my speakers for a bit. I put that one as the default, but it is still not recognizing MY MIC.

All Brekat has to do is right click on the mic and set it to default communication device.

How is this so difficult to understand?

It is your mic.

The mic isnt even being recognized. The driver is for a microphone of some sort, but its not the one I'm used to. I have no idea what is wrong.

Can you just right click on what you put in the screenshot and choose "set as default communication device" by left clicking it?

It already is my default communication device. And I have sound, it's just very very low.

No it is not as per your screenshot.

If you don't want to follow simple instructions, then you shouldn't have a working mic.

Notice the telephone icon in the picture.

If somehow it is working already, all you need to do is check the box for mic boost to make it louder in advanced or custom tab or similar.

We gonna make this work lol!

If I right click on it, it doesn't give me an option to do that unless I enable the Line-In, and right click on it, then it lets me select one or the other as the default communication device, but it won't let me go to that if it's already selected. It's not that simple when nothing everyone else has been doing is working.

OK. Refer to your image above. Double click the microphone. This should bring up the Microphone Properties dialogue. Note that this is from mine, and yours might well be slightly different. Select the Levels tab and make any necessary adjustments. You may also need to select one or more of the other tabs and make adjustments there as well.

I'm at 100 and +.40 db (they're both all the way and I can't change them.)

Find a different driver version which could help or you'll need a better (read: more compatible) mic.
