On my and my Nanas laptop the microphones, both internal and external have gone very quite. The only time they pick up sound is if you tap them or have them right up to your mouth.

I've tried reinstalling the drivers on my laptop but with no result. When using Microsofts default drivers after uninstalling the drivers the mics worked fine

The only change on both computers have been installing Skype 5, but this has been rolled back to Skype 4.2 and the problem still exsits. Intrestingly, when speaking Skypes green microphone bar fills up all the way, but no one can here me if I call them.

Tried two mics but again neither of them work, nor do the laptops internal mics.

My laptop specs
Acer Aspire 5739G
Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 @ 2.13 GHz
4GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
Nivdia Geforce GT 240M
Realtek High Definition Audio

My Nanas laptop specs
Compaq CQ75-230SA
Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4200 @ 2.00GHz
3GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit
IDT High Definition Audio
Integrated Intel Graphics

How do I get the mics working on these laptops again?

Look at your microphone properties and make sure the volume slider is up and not muted.

So when you try Skype, you see the meter indicating the mic is working. Everything was fine until you upgraded Skype?

That is correct, everything was fine untill upgrading Skype, although even after uninstalling the problem remained. Even though Skypes mic meter was full, no one on Skype could hear me.

Right click the Microsoft Speaker icon in the taskbar, select Recording Devices, make sure the Mic is the deafault recording device (w/green check mark).

Select the Mix with a single click then select the properties button... go to the "Listen" tab, select... Listen to this device.
(Checks the "Levels" tab for record/Mic level adjustments.)

I've not used Skype but I know there are several audio setting there, might want to chel the manual and make sure everything is set up right.

From what I understand Skype can affect your Mic recording level through Skype's recording level adjustment. The controls are there, they just need to be set correctly.

Skype seems to pick up my mic fine.

And for some reason after doing a test call with Skype, it started working everywhere!

Why it did I will never know

Thanks a lot guys!
