i get static on my microphone when recording and i dont know what is making it static. my microphone is sm58 so its not a cheap one and my cable is a monster cable so i know its not the mic or the cable(they work fine on my old computer). the problem is that i get static from both the front and back microphone jack but NOT when i use the line in jack. iv tryed everything i know from uninstalling/reinstalling the sound card drivers, making sure they are up to date and even just plugging in a adapter so my computer reads a mic being plugged in without there being a real mic in, and it still gives statics but if i use line in i dont get static at all. any advise on what is making both my front and back mic jacks create static but not the line in jack that is 100% clear when i use it.

nevermind i got tired of trying everything i knew and could find and called hp support and they are going to replace my chipset and everything that needs to be fixed because my computer wasnt the only one doing this. he said the main problems in the other ones where defective insulation on the wires or interference from other wires because the wires are so close around the plugs or a defective chip set because it wasn't all my plugs making static but only my front and back microphone jacks that where making static.

most mic wires (if not all) are vulnerable to electricity and static noise. Those wires aren't shielded or protected, I would try to find an alternate location for the wires.

This is quite common, older machines had much lower power coming from the PSU... the newer computers generally have a much more powerful PSU/electrical usage, thus the static noise builds as well.
