Microsoft has a fascination with big screens. The software giant has demonstrated Windows 8 on its 82-inch Perceptive Pixel PC and created giant displays with Kinect built in. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates even uses a giant 80-inch Windows 8 display occasionally. Today, however, Microsoft is going one step further. At one of London’s biggest tourist attractions, Trafalgar Square, the company has created a 383-inch Surface tablet.

Hi there
Since in London the Metro /Subway/Tube never seems to work properly at the weekends I suppose it gives people something to look at instead of trains that don't appear.

(Mind you there are some decent pubs in that area of London - Ms would have spent the money better by having a small commercial in some of these pubs while offering customers free food and drink !!!).

If FOOD is being served kids can go into a pub in the UK - but only in the "designated" (????) food area. - Can't see why the UK is so anti-kid -- we were presumably all one at some stage of our lives --in fact as I get older I'm probably behaving more like one every day again !!!.

Kids are allowed in bars in continental Europe without any seemingly adverse effects -- even pubs where loads of typical workmen using quite colourful language are drinking. -- The "Do gooders" are the people who cause the problem not the workmen or the drinkers.

When I was small I often was taken to very basic "Workmens" type Bars-- don't think it did me any harm --maybe the opposite -- I learnt a lot more useful things in those places than I ever did at any type of School or educational establishment !!!!.

Such as the proper way to use cuss words? Here in the US kids are allowed in pubs/bars/ restaurants that serve alcohol but must sit in designated "family" areas.

Actually the fact they are allowed in doesn't mean that they are in every bar either - far from it - parents seem to exercise plenty of responsibility and in a lot of bars you can have a nice "Kid-less" drink too - and the kids are usually gone anyway by around 16:00 -- continental schools give kids much more homework to do than typical UK schools - and ensure it's done too. !!!!!!


(For example Delirium Bar central Brussels -- massive number of Ales on sale -- rarely if ever do you see "kids" in there - Students maybe - and it only closes when the last customer is exhausted !!!!! - in spite of the "advertised times").

I suppose it depends on your definition of kid. From what I remember from my days as a barman (admittedly this was about 5 years ago now) the rules are basically:

A child can go into a pub at any age as long as they are supervised by parents and in the restaurant area ("family friendly" - ie not in the main bar area)
Anyone under 16 is not allowed at the actual bar (where you order drinks), although in practice I used to allow kids at the bar as long as their parents were there and they moved off once ordering was finished.
A child over 14 is allowed in the main bar area, if supervised by parents.
A child over 16 is allowed in unsupervised, but is not allowed to sit/stand at the bar unless ordering.

As an interesting aside.. a child of any age (I believe... although it may be over 14) is allowed to drink as much as they like, as long as they are eating a full sit down meal, but the drink must be taken away when the meal is done. (Although every barman I ever met would let them finish their drink).

Exactly, who wants kids crawling between their legs. Reminds me this story:

Kids were making terror in a 747 flying over the Atlantic. They were running around the isles screaming and yelling. A gentleman got up and said he was a teacher and could deal with the situation. He called the kids to the back of the plane and 5 minutes later there was total silence. People asked him how he managed to pacify these wild kids. Easy, he said - I opend the backdoor and asked them to go play in the courtyard.
