Microsoft mistakenly caps some users' OneDrive storage limits

Microsoft mistakenly capped some Office 365 users' OneDrive cloud storage at one terabyte earlier than promised, but a fix is coming...

...It was a mistake, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed. Microsoft officials expect to reinstitute previous storage amounts early this week.

The official statement:

"Some OneDrive customers may have been prematurely migrated to a 1TB storage plan. Data stored with OneDrive remains secure during this process, and we're working hard to revert those users back to their original plan as soon as possible. All Office 365 users with over 1TB of storage will be able to keep that storage limit for at least one year as previously announced." Update (February 9): The spokesperson said the issue has been resolved and affected users have had their storage quotas restored as of today, February 9.

Actually, everyone does use the cloud. It's just certain ways of using the cloud that can cause problems.

I have (basic) Dropbox for uploading TAFE Assignments.

Email is in a cloud and they are hacked all the time.
Facebook is in a cloud and they are hacked all the time.
With a little research and one will find that even Dropbox has been hacked. Their is nothing on line that is unhackable.

Clouds just put a bunch of information in one place.
One stop shopping for the friendly hacker.

The term "Cloud Computing" is fairly new but cloud computing isn't new. We all have been doing it for years.
Any time one stores data on a computer that they have to access using the internet it's in a cloud. Data is store some place on some computer system, some place in the world.

In today's computer would we can't run from clouds and get much done. We just have to be concerned about the safety measure that are take to try and keep are data safe.
Also remember that your data access in a cloud depends on your internet. If by chance your internet goes down you don't have access to that cloud data. Some peoples internet is slow or has limits on data transfer. Data transfer would be very slow or cut short due to the limits.

What does all this mean; well if at all possible keep data within the reach of your system without the internet. Storage hardware is cheap these days for the average computer user. A few T.B. of hard drive storage can hold a lot of data that one can access as long as they have electricity to their system.

Their is a place for Cloud storage and a place for storage on your own hardware. We all probably use both. When the data is on your system you have complete control of the security. When your data is in a cloud, whoever is in control of the cloud also has control of the security. Who do you trust the most? Yourself or someone, some place in the world that you don't even know who it is or where they are?

Cloud computing is like a good woman. You can't live with them and you can't live without them.
