Microsoft has stopped supporting Office 2003. I am not crazy about getting the latest version. The main reason for not wanting to get the newest is first cost and also I have 10 years of more of MS Word that uses the .doc format. Many of these I update fairly often.

Does anyone know what the last version of Word that used the .doc format?

Thank you

I have (had) Office 2003 Professional. I have started using Libre Office and so far no problems for word documents and for existing Publisher documents that I have.

I have been looking at other e-mail programs. I've been trying Thunderbird and Windows Live Mail. So far Thunderbird is slightly ahead but I haven't settled on a replacement for Outlook 2003.

DOC files can be opened in all versions of Word, including Word 2013. Additionally Word 2013 lets you save as DOC instead of DOCX by selecting Save as type: Word 97-2003 Document:

Thank you both. That was good info.

I did not know I could save documents as doc in the new word..
I also plan to use Outlook and be able to import my old contact list and have it work.

Thanks a million

The same goes for Excel files too. Excel 2013 can open and save Office 97/2003 files.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
The same goes for Excel files too. Excel 2013 can open and save Office 97/2003 files.
It's a global feature in Office 2013. I still use a database created with Access 97, later converted to Access 2003 and now working with it on Access 2013.
