Microsoft Office 2010/ Replace Office 2010

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64 and Microsoft Office 2007 Small Business. I will be receiving Office 2010 Professional Plus. Do I have to uninstall Office 2007 Small Business or can I install Office 2010 over it. What is the best way to handle the upgrade. I have a lot of files on word and excell. Will they transfer over.

You are strongly advised to uninstall Office 2007 first.

Make sure you have a copy of all that you wish to transfer / use on the new Office 2010.

I really don't want to have a go at a fellow SF member but I've installed Office 2010 a number of times on computers running Office 2007.

When you install you get a nice screen asking you if you want to UPGRADE or do a custom installation.

Just upgrade and you'll be fine. All your email settings (outlook 2007) will not be changed etc etc.

Note I assume you are installing Office 2010 32 bit version -- I wouldn't recommend the 64 bit version even on Windows x-64 unless on a pure development machine and then in THIS CASE you'd have to uninstall Office 2007. I'm running Office 2010 32 bit on a Windows 7 enterprise x-64 machine.

Insert the office 2007 and select Remove Office 2007 to uninstall. This will work if you WANT to uninstall first but you don't need to if replacing Office 2007 with Office 2010 32 bit.


BTW if you have components such as Visio and Project these won't get uninstalled by upgrade until you install the 2010 versions of those -- no prob running Visio 2007 / project 2007 with the main Office 2010 suite.

Unfortunately your good luck is not universal...
Not all upgrades of all programs are completed successfully [Office or otherwise.]

Always a good idea to uninstall before you install a newer version!

Different Opinions

As you can see there are differing opinions. I would go with the uninstall, but that is a matter of choice. Office 2010 can be a real bear to install and uninstall. Whatever path you choose, make an image of your disk beforee you start and set it aside just in case. If it gets out of hand you can get back to a good copy. The links above for uninstalls should be carefully read and followed if that is the path you choose.

Microsoft say you can install different Office versions on the same computer, although they don't recommend it in certain scenarios.

I think an upgrade is probably your best bet, but whichever way you go the advice you've been given about backing up important data first is good advice.

Failing that, backup important data, uninstall Office 2007, and then install Office 2010.

If it's any help to you, I recently tried to install Office 2010 on a computer with Powerpoint Viewer 2007 on it and was prompted to uninstall Office 2007 software first.
