You have to buy a PC with it installed by the OEM. It's not available as a stand alone product and any copies not installed by the OEM at the time of manufacture are fraudulent and break the license agreement. In other words, it's illegal.

Right, if it didn't come with the computer it's not otherwise available. It was pretty much a replaced for Microsoft Works that was included by the brands on their new computer but I haven't seen it on the last several new computers I've set up [8.0/8.1].

If wanting free try LibreOffice, compatible with most Office files but doesn't have an E-Mail Client/application.

If it wasn't on your computer when you bought it, you can't have it legally. It doesn't matter what the copy is, it's just that--A copy and illegal. It's issued to OEM manufacturers ONLY with a condition of a retail PC sale.

You might have noticed that the links to it through a web search are dead-ended. MS has been cracking down on illegal copies of software. You might even find that if you did get a copy, it may not work. On top of that, MS could revoke your OS license.

It's not available for individual sale and it's not free. That's just the way it is. If you want Office, go buy a student/home edition. I bought a 3-pack a couple of years ago and it wasn't that much for what you get.

Hmmmmmm. That's strange. Was there a post deleted?

MS has an ISO download. It works the same way as the Windows 7 download--You'll need the key.

Added: The link is via Microsoft. The support page that directs you to the link is very confusing and cluttered with other download options. If it doesn't make it through the forum police, I'll see if I can find the support link again. :)

Reinstall Win 7 from backup discs and get Office Starter back?

New to this forum. Please help me understand etiquette and let me know if I should start a new thread. Thanks!

My original Asus laptop came with Office Starter installed. I bought a new SSD and had it installed at the store and they reinstalled Win 7. They gave me back the original harddrive in a box. I have a reader that I have attached to the old drive so I can pull files off of it.

For some reason, they installed Win 7 from the computer's serial number instead of using the backup discs I had made when the computer was new.

Now I have no Office Starter. Is there a way to pull a key from the old harddrive? Or, can I reinstall Win 7 from my backup discs and get Office Starter back that way?

Thank you!

Knowing that eventually I have to capitulate and download Win 10 I was somewhat pleased when I found Classic Shell that made 10 look, sorta like my beloved 7. Even found the 7 Orb for the start button! I'm not a guy that likes to live in the past but I'm a big believer in 'If it ain't broke -don't fix it. As I'm not a big user of WP I was quite satisfied with Word Starter 2010. However the fine folk at MS have a dialogue window that tells me it won't work on Win 10. I'm now at a junction. Revert to 7 and eventually pay for 10 or live with 10 disguised as 7. Before I make that decision has anyone any ideas how to make Word Starter run on 10. I've tried Apache, bur it's not like Word in 7. I have comparability issues in viewing docs and other annoying idiosyncrasy's
