Computerworld - Microsoft has already prepared Windows 7 with code to let users download the new operating system's first service pack, a prominent blogger reported last weekend.

Rafael Rivera, who writes the Within Windows blog, sniffed out several keys in Windows 7's registry that add an eligibility check for Service Pack 1 (SP1).

A first service pack -- which includes already-issued security patches as well as new bug fixes, and in some cases, new features -- is important because many corporations won't widely deploy a new edition of Windows until that milestone has been reached. Service packs are also relatively rare: Windows XP, which debuted in October 2001, has had only three.

Rivera took the appearance of the eligibility check to mean that SP1 testing is imminent. "The takeaway here is that external [emphasis in original] Windows 7 SP1 testing should commence soon, if it hasn't already," said Rivera.

The Redmond company traditionally releases the first Service Pack for a new Windows OS approximately one year after the platform was finalized, and is currently cooking SP1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. A third-party report indicates that the software giant has started preparing Windows 7 copies for the delivery of the first external testing development milestone of Windows 7 SP1.

I ran the SP2 beta on Vista for 6 months without issues while Vista was still on here. Generally by the time the beta version is available it has been through some rigorous testing and ready to be looked over. The feedback when any provided eventually sees any remaining bugs addressed before the finished SP is out.

I suspect a few things that will be seen in SP1 for 7 address any issues that come up with the new USB 3.0 standard now becoming available as well as a few minor bugs still to be found with 7. So far I had to agree with someone on another thread about 7 being "ready to go" from the start without the need for an SP!

Once the beta release notes are available along with the trial version you'll be able to see just what the service pack will be addressing as far as any problems and updated support for things.

As far as 8 is concerned MS isn't simply a small room for 10 people working on one thing for 3yrs. to come out with a new OS with S.Balmer in a corner somewhere watching. You have hundreds working just in one area of development alone. One of the video clips seen in a recent blog showed how far they went just to come up with the default wallpaper.

I suspect it will at least correct the "Taskhost" bug upon shutting down Windows 7.

It appears to be a rampant issue and it's bugging me a lot lately. While it's harmless, this message should never appear.

I suspect it will at least correct the "Taskhost" bug upon shutting down Windows 7.

It appears to be a rampant issue and it's bugging me a lot lately. While it's harmless, this message should never appear.

What message is that?

Another thing that will cause a delay in shutdown time is going too low if you opt to lower the WaitToKillServices tweak. The 2000 mark in the guide for this allows for everything to close out while going beyond that too far isn't a good idea. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/717-shut-down-speed-up.html?filter[2]=Performance Maintenance

At the 800 mark even lower then the 1000 mark seen in another combination tweak, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26476-desktop-shutdown-tweaks-combined.html?filter[2]=Performance Maintenance You start seeing the "waiting for 1 program to close" type messages onscreen when going to log off or restart.

Rasing things back up a bit will avoid the need to request a hotfix if this is something you did already. The 2000 mark seen in the first guide covers everything while still bringing the time down from 12000 = 12 seconds to 2000 = 2 seconds. At 800 and lower expect problems! I ran into that at 500 and lower.

All that of course is separate from what you would be seeing in a service pack since that's a custom mod of the registry itself you do on your own there. The service pack generally incorporates updates for various things like system services as well as occasionally enabling something needed for a new hardware. I'm sure that SP1 for 7 will also address any issues with the new USB 3.0 now being seen as well.

My first reaction is, "Why mess up this wonderful operating system witha sevice pack"? But from past experiences SPs do fix things after the beta, then test, then test and then final release. That's exactly the problem.

Oh, I thought that was how it was supposed to work. Mine never hangs, it takes a few seconds and then shuts down.

Mine doesn't hang either, but it delays for approximately 500 ms before proceeding with the rest of the shutdown procedures.

500 ms here, 500 ms there, pretty soon, you'll be shaving off some real time from my life.
