Microsoft releases another new test build of IE 9

Microsoft is making available for download on October 28 another new test build of Internet Explorer 9.

The IE 9 Platform Preview 6 build is available for download from Microsoft’s IETestDrive site. The latest build “reflects developer feedback and delivers better performance as well as more standards support, like CSS3’s 2D transforms,” according to the company.

Microsoft also has added some new demos and test cases to its Test Drive site.
Microsoft announced the availability of the newest IE 9 test build during the opening day keynote of the company’s two-day Professional Developers Conference, which is happening on the Redmond campus of the company.

Microsoft execs said today that there have been 10 million downloads of the IE 9 beta, which the company made available in mid-September.

Thank you for choosing to install Internet Explorer Platform Preview.

Click "Run" when prompted to Run or Save the downloaded file. If you happen to have already installed a previous version of Internet Explorer Platform Preview, close any running instances before clicking "Run" on the file download confirmation dialog.

I was about to ask if we should uninstall previous release before installing the new one. It is not needed.

And as another side note, this does not replace the IE9 Beta. It is a separate build which can run side by side with IE9 Beta.

For me the last beta had glaring problems with stablity and the copy paste function was simply terrible, it was pretty much unusable for me.

I did like the layout of IE9 and the placement of features was well thought out and very user friendly. I saw much potential and knew the problems would be fixed before too long. Another good thing is that it was very easy to go back to IE 8 where I was having zero problems.

This new beta however is much better, no stablity problems so far and pages open up noticably faster. The copy paste funcionality is improved but not quite perfect yet in my testing. I may be able to stick with this version as it's greatly improved over the last beta.

So when is the final expected? I had the beta on my machine before reinstaled 7 and didn't see much point in going back to it. I liked the idea but it wasn't there yet for me.

I tried this. It added the new features, but also severely decreased the stability. Every time I open a new tab, there's like a 90% chance that it will crash and that I will have to reload it.

Actually, I think I did something wrong that screwed it up. I just tried it again, but this time following the instructions exactly as they appeared and it seems to be fine right now. The only downside so far is that this doesn't work in IE9 x64.

EDIT: Another downside. It seems that you can no longer download files with the modified IE9 Beta.

EDIT: Never mind, the problems came back. I'm not trying this again.
