Microsoft removes Autorun feature

Microsoft has disabled the Autorun feature so often thought to be at the heart of computer security infections.

In an update that applies to all Windows releases with the exception of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the firm has limited how Autorun behaves after realising how often it was used to propagate malware.


Adam Shostack, a programme manager working in security at Microsoft, said that he had done a lot of work in classifying and quantifying how Windows computers get compromised.

"One thing that popped up from that analysis was the proportion of infected machines with malware that uses Autorun to propagate," he said in a blog post.

that is far and away the best thing they could have done with windows , autorun is the first thing to be disabled by me on any new pc , its a nuisance and a security risk

I'm with archie here - I always disable autorun right after I install Windows. Never thought it to be useful at all.

I also uncheck the block on don't show file extensions of known file types and the blocks on hidden files and system files. I think they should be default to show all.

I've never used AutoPlay either. Mostly because, when I insert a disc or other removable media, I'm almost always doing something different with it. And almost always what I'm doing isn't something that would show up in AutoPlay anyways.

a lot of inexperienced users rely on autorun to kick in when they insert cd's.

there is a frighteningly large number of pc users who don't know how to use windows explorer to navigate to setup files for innocent software.

Having teenagers in the house myself, I'm not sure, it's about that they don't know how to open the disks to play their noise what they claim to be music...they just don't want to be bothered:roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:

The only way that I find autorun to be useful, is that it verifies that a disc is seen by the OS, which narrows down the problem when that disc isn't seen by a program that needs it.

This update was optional...to be ticked for being installed.

I just turn off autoplay because it's annoying have a pop-up appear any time I put something in my computer, whether or not I want to use it right then or not.
