This being the final Patch Tuesday before the expiry of the free upgrade to Windows 10, those Windows 7 and 8.x users who do not want to upgrade may consider it advisable to be extra watchful over this month's updates. It would seem highly desirable not to install any updates for a few days in order to allow full information to be gleaned as to the extent of any final upgrading "push".

I personally no longer trust any further updates to my Windows 7 installation. Windows 10 attempting to install automatically yesterday out of nowhere whilst playing GTA V...Luckily I rebooted to prevent it and restored to a restore point I made an hour before that had happened as I was doing some changes to my system. Thank goodness!

I wish our laptop could get as far as you guys in actually listing them. I started it at 7.30 pm manually checking for updates and it's now 10 pm and it's still checking for updates. Every single month this facade

I wonder if it's better to let Windows find the updates itself in the background instead of always setting off a manual search. It's actually my mother in laws laptop. She obviously had it on this afternoon as it did list some updates and said last check was 4.30 pm. Of course I know that at 6 pm UK the patch Tuesday updates are available so there are more to be found. I could wait 24 hours til tomorrow at which point the update process should auto check again but obviously we will always want to get the laborious process out the way which is why we always kick off a manual check. Probably has nothing to do with it and is just MS servers being lousy as they have appeared to be for months. But I guess it's something to ponder

No but if one was obediently installing the updates month after month wouldn't of that gone in somewhere along the line anyway?

Switch to Never check for updates and restart the machine and manually install KB3161608

After switch your update settings back to what ever you had before and the search should start back up if not manually check for updates.

I'm never in a hurry to get any updates, and given that I switch off my two computers whenever I am out of the house or at night, they only ever get updates when I switch them on the day after patch day (like you, I'm in the UK). I can appreciate that it's different if you're looking after someone else's computer and need to deal with updates when you're there, but personally I would never search for updates nor would I install any that are routinely offered without waiting several days for any problems to become apparent and any offending updates to be hot-fixed or withdrawn.

I'm finding it to be a complete and utter waste of time checking for updates on patch Tuesday. Even with all these so called workarounds MS has issued, it's like fighting a losing battle. Not sure about everyone else but if I trigger a manual update on a patch Tuesday it just runs and runs and.... You know the rest. I'd say it's better to leave it for a few days. I don't usually install them until the week after anyway.
Running 2 VM's tonight and neither of them picked up any updates even after a couple of hours.

Wow, your a star. That seems to of done the trick. That particular KB was sitting under optional updates rather than recommended. We tend to ignore the optional ones. But anyway it's been sitting ther since mid/late June. So I installed it and after reboot did check for updates. All found within a minute! Hopefully it will still be ok next month. I am extremely grateful to you

After choosing to click on Manual Update, it took exactly 2 and a half hours. That has to be a record for me lol. It normally takes 50 minutes tops for a Manual. All because I wanted to check on them individually, info etc.

I was quite surprised to only see 8 Updates. I don't think I have seen, so few before?

Strange. My machine found the 10 updates in a couple of minutes. I always do it manually, this way I can filter out everything that's related to Windows 10.

I have that KB on my desktop and it seems to have done the trick for that computer,
BUT.....I had to do a full recovery on my wife's Toshiba laptop (W7-x64) and last night I started the manual check for updates and it took all night to complete the search, now I have 180 updates to go. I installed over 200 mg worth of updates this morning. Now I'm involved in another long slow search again, it's been 6 hours so far this time.

Question..... KB3161608 didn't show up on that 1st search for updates, would it hurt to install it now or do I need to wait till WU says it's time?

You can install the newest update client KB3161608 anytime you want too
Just make sure you switch the update settings to never check for updates first and restart the machine.


Yes this works with either 32 or 64 bit
Just use option 2
