Microsoft Security Essentials Outperforms Paid Antivirus in AV Test

These results aren't consistent with other testing organizations.

But no other organization has used as many samples while performing dynamic tests.

AV-Comparatives are going to publish a test with a similar amount of samples soon.

Edit: MSE2 was tested while earlier versions of AVG, Norton and F-Secure were tested.

would have been interesting if they had included Comodo in that test, I already know it's better than all of the others mentioned, but it requires a bit of common sense to use effectively.

anyway, i'm an mse user too - i only have minor issues with it, and in fact i switched to it from a legit kis 2010, as kaspersky had an unfortunate side effect with my current fave game, bad company 2. i believe they have fixed it now, but i'm in no hurry to go back.

I also had KIS for 3 years. At some point a virus attacked me and made KIS unusable. My only way to save me was to install MSE. It worked and got rid of my virus.

I then had KIS and MSE in parallel for some months with no problems. Since W7 has much safer firewall than my old XP I decided not to renew KIS and just use MSE with Malwarebytes and the W7 firewall - all free.

KIS also seemed to have more problems with some software. their support was great and helpful and they often came with fixes. but i prefer a software tht doesn't have problems to begin with.

I don't trust NSS Labs. They have been known to run 'vendor sponsored' tests and to me, that makes them dubious. I like comparing Virus Bulletin with AV Comparatives results to get a more balanced view.

I love MSE. It works very well and best of all, it's free. McAfee and Trend Micro I don't mind so much for paid AV. As long as you don't the piece of crap Sophos, you're fine.

I wouldn't wouldn't use either but Sophos performs better than Trend Micro in everything I've read.

That doesn't help me pick my security program to use lol. I'm torn between Kaspersky (300 days left) and MSE.

I'm very anal about what goes onto my PC, it bugs me when I put a Program on it, then something better comes along

you can use both. I've done it for months. They will tell you you only can run at a time, but that is BS.

I guess you can always pick holes in any AV or any other program....Don't forget.."There's lies, damn lies and statistics" !!!! The main thing is, to make sure you have at least got some form of AV protection..

I run MSE now on my W7 rig...but for the last 5 or 6 years I ran an XP Home rig completely AV free...no protection whatsoever bar Windows Firewall. My PC never got a virus and as far as I know there were no cripplingly malicious programs spying on me, stealing my money, hacking into NASA from my IP, no keyloggers...now there may have been some sneaky little things in there logging down what websites I visited or something...but I never got burnt in 5-6 years. I never visited any seemy sites, never opened an exe I didn't know about, never installed any apps I didn't know about, never clicked flashing neon adverts on sites, never opened an email from a stranger and clicked the enclosed link that would guarantee me $1000 a day working from my chair at home....now, I'm not a crusader for the AV is for suckers crowd...or the 'AV companies feed and pray on our fear' bandwagon...but still...if you don't have 'some form of AV protection' on your computer, then it may not be the end of the world.

I don't recommend doing what I did...I'm just saying is all...

Some malware you don't notice.

Obviously when you never go to bad websites, never get bad files etc. you'll be safe too. but even friends can knowingly have viruses and send them to you. If you did't have a virus at all, you are very lucky.

It's like you can have unprotected sex as long as your partners are not infected. Obviously living in abstinence doesn't require condoms. For everyone else, condoms are needed. Same for AV. If I just canceled my internet connection I didn't need AV either :-) but i take my chances with a good AV.

In my experience, torrent or any other type of file sharing gives you 99% of the viruses. But also if you live a good life, the remaining 1% can kill you.

If you scan the posts in this forum you will find most use MSE and run the free Malwarebytes when necessary.

Agree with you Ken, OP should bite the bullet, go for it and see if they like it. If they don't, check out the alternatives, after all, software is easy to remove....usually!!
