This is a quote from Microsoft:

Microsoft is offering Microsoft Security Essentials as an optional update to Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users who subscribe to Microsoft Updates.

There is a big difference between MS Windows Update and MS Updates. Windows update only updates Windows and MS Updates also updates other MS program such as MS Office. Before Win 7, using the browser for up dates you could choice either Windows Update or Microsoft Updates. In Windows 7 Microsoft Updates is an option under Windows Update and is turned off by default. Microsoft's contention is you have to opt-in to Microsoft Updates to get offered MSE and this is how they say it is not a violation of anti-trust since you choose to get the offer. Here is the option under Windows Update.

Yes, absolutely. If they provide something free of charge and then automatically install it to anything that doesn't have an AV....than those people then know that they have an AV and don't need anything from anybody else...and thus the other AV companies lose business.
