Whether they’re running Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0 or 2.0, users that are currently leveraging the free security solution for genuine Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP will be able to update their current version this week.

The software giant had planned to release a refresh to Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0’s antimalware engine today, November 15th.

This is nothing more than a monthly update to MSE 1.0 designed to keep up the pace with the evolution of the threat environment.

“As part of regular update of our antimalware technology to address the latest in the threat landscape, MMPC is planning to release a new antimalware engine on 15 November 2010,” a member of the Microsoft Antimalware Engine team stated last week.

“Affected products: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), Forefront Client Security (FCS) Engine Version will be in the range of 1.1.640X.0.”

However, it appears that the release of the update was delayed until November 16th. “The release date of Antimalware Engine 1.1.640X.0 has changed from 15 November 2010 to 16 November 2010,” the Redmond company revealed.

Open the MSE dashboard, click on "Help" in the upper right corner of the screen. Then select "About MSE". This will tell you which version you're running. 2.0 is still in beta testing so unless you specifically opted in to test it you're most likely running 1.0

I highly doubt that MSE is useful. It seems like doing nothing. Anyone have concerns like I do? Or is it just perfect for you?

My KIS 2010 License expires tomorrow, so I think about paying for it. I consider switching to MSE. But it doesn't have any Internet security integrated?

What exactly do you mean by "integrated"? MSE has been favorably compared to several paid programs as well as free programs. It protects against viruses, spyware and other malicious software. Many Forum members recommend MSE with supplemental on demand scans by free Malwarebytes.

As a member of the first beta team for MSE back in July 2009 (think that the correct date) I have had no problems. During testing and after it has identified three different viruses. And, as of yet it hasn't failed to work within the system with any specific application.

Been using the MSE 2 beta for several months without any problems or slow downs brought on by MSE.

At present I would recommend it to anyone running Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

e.g. Kaspersky has two different product Kaspersky Antivirus and Kaspersky Internet Securtiy.

Kaspersky Internet Security has protection against online threats (like phishing, spam control etc) but Kaspersky Antivirus has none. I wonder If the same situation stands for MSE, too.

MSE is a basic product. In that respect it works well at what it was designed to do. If a person feels s/he needs more than basic antivirus, antispyware and rootkit prevention, then MSE probably won't be for them. This review by Paul Thurrott, a well respected Windows guru, may help you in your decision making.

Hi all:
I've been using MSE for maybe 10 months now and like it.
It's not intrusive, doesn't seem to use up a lot of system resources, and it has caught & cleaned 3 bad guys since it's installation.
One thing I miss, though, is a right-click option to scan a single file; any way to put that in the context menu?
TIA

Sorry if I misunderstood what you're asking. You can right-click a file and scan it with MSE.

I don't how you did that!
When I right-click anything, a folder, or a file, the MSE scan option is not in my context menu.

Now, what do you suppose is up with that?!
---
And, how on earth did you manage to get that screen capture?!
If I click on anything, the context menu disappears.
What are you using for the snapshot?

rap33042, I have fix that was mainly for solving the same problem with the 2.0 beta when it first came out, where if you did an upgrade install the context menu would not appear. I do not know if it will solve your problem or not and I recommend creating a restore point before using it to be safe.

...The lack of the context menu option is a slight bug where a certain DLL does not run. Open an elevated command prompt. Run the following command: regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Security Client\shellext.dll"

I'd try running the command provided by Petey7. (To repeat, create a restore point just in case.) That should restore the right click scan option. If it doesn't, it could be because the 2.0 beta version is called Microsoft Security Client. I seem to recall the original 1.0 version was called something else. Post back if it doesn't work for you.

~sigh~. . . . . If I tell you my screen capture secrets I'll have to kill someone. :roflmao:

Yowanvista was correct. I used the Prnt Scrn button to save the active screen to the clipboard. (When you do a Prnt Scrn nothing seems to happen. But in actuality a copy of the screen is saved in the clipboard.) I then opened Paint and pasted that "invisible" screen capture. Paint has some basic editing tools so I added the arrow. Then I used the Snipping Tool to cut out the final picture, saved it as a JPEG, and pasted it into the thread using the paper clip icon on the "reply to message" toolbar. Maybe there's a better way to do it but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Petey7:
Well, I tried your suggestion. Had to change the path to \Microsoft Security Essentials\ and registered the .dll just fine.
However, I still don't see MSE option in the context menu.
I checked the MSE version and it is: Microsoft Security Essentials Version: 1.0.2498.0
Sometimes, when I re-boot the system MSE icon stays red until I open it.
Is a re-install in order?
Is version 2.0 available for download now?
