Brisk Windows 7 sales show Microsoft has 'put Vista behind it,' still rules OS roost.

Microsoft weathered the storm of Windows Vista, 2007's often-abused operating system, an analyst said today after reviewing the company latest earnings.

"At this point it appears Microsoft has put Vista behind it," said Allan Krans, an analyst with Technology Business Research. "People may not have been happy with it, but there were limited choices. For consumers, Vista was the default, and for businesses, they may have delayed buying new machines, but they will still pay Microsoft at some point."

Microsoft's financial performance for its fiscal third quarter, which ended March 31, and the fueling of its earnings by Windows 7, makes his point that the company's survived the dark days of Vista, Krans continued. "The best case scenario for Microsoft was to retain its leadership position, and results indicate it's done just that," he said. "It speaks to the power of the market for Windows."

On Thursday, Microsoft reported net income of $4.01 billion, up 35% over the same period the year before, on revenue of $14.5 billion, up 6%.

Couldn't agree more. All versions of Vista I've used (Home Pre 32-bit, Business 32-bit, Enterprise 32-bit, Ultimate 64-bit) were great.

I never used Vista for that long since I switched to the Windows 7 beta just about as soon as it was leaked out but from what I did use I enjoyed using it. I think it was way more stable then XP ever was and seemed to run decent on my system.

Vista really should not have gotten such a bad rap. I guess that's what can happen when you don't show off your product and lets other companies do it for you...

I agree. However, I was lucky that my first impression of Vista was good : I downloaded a copy and tried it on a computer with enough specs. I had no problems whatsover and even less when I actually decided to dump XP.

I loved XP and I love 7 but Vista was not a very good experience for me. I agree that it wasn't that bad after it was tweaked properly but an OS should work properly outta the box.

The problem that people had with vista was this...

Their systems were running Windows XP which XP came out in 2001.

Vista I think came out Jan 30 07. So there is a big 6 year span of technology...

People just did not have the specs to run Vista therefore was a horrible system for them becuase it was crappy. Yes, vista did take up alot of space, memory and did lag but if you had the specs to handle it then vista was awsome. I agree with others. Windows 7 was built from Vista.

I first installed Vista on a system with the following specs:
AMD 4200+ x2 2.2Ghz Processor
2GB RAM
ATI Radeon x800 256MB video card
250GB HDD

There is no reason that Vista should have had a problem with those specs. I will admit as in the previous post that it ran much better after a lot of tweaking and with the updates.

Point is I was not installing Vista on a machine that I built for XP. Vista had it's issues and there is no denying it. I am glad that some people didn't but a lot of people did. To say it was the greatest OS until 7 came along is just being a homer IMO.

It didn't help that a many PC manufacturers wanted to load Vista on machines with under 1 gig of memory either. Throw Norton 2008 or 2009 on one of those systems and you have a lagfest.

Couldn't agree more. All versions of Vista I've used (Home Pre 32-bit, Business 32-bit, Enterprise 32-bit, Ultimate 64-bit) were great.

Upon it's initial release into the world, it was far from a great operating system. Many problems with driver support....mostly from third party vendors....but consumers still felt the pain. Many of these issues were fixed with time and with SP1 and then SP2.

The other big complaint was the required system resources to get good performance. You have to remember that back then, we were at a time when lots of people only had marginal XP machines that they wanted to upgrade. Now, 3+ years down the road, people have upgraded, have more modern hardware, far more RAM and thus boxes are running Vista better. Of course, comparing Vista to Windows 7...7 is quite a bit more streamlined and certainly does startup and shutdown faster than Vista.

My biggest complaint these days with Vista in the business world is that shutting down workstations, and laptops (mostly), seems to take forever after lots of use. My work computer was well over 4 minutes to shut down and power off. Windows 7 on the same machine is under 30 seconds.

I didn't run Vista for any length of time because there was no pressing need to. Under almost any benchmark I saw XP ran faster on the kind of specs I had (AMD x64 4600+, 3gb RAM). So whilst XP was supported I stayed with it.

Win 7 was a different matter, I upgraded straight away. Although tests revealed it was not significantly faster than Vista, it certainly felt like it. A clean, modern and responsive OS was a good reason to upgrade.
