if you only use your computer for email, browsing online, some light word processing, and viewing movies or photographs, there's little reason for it, and good reasons not to upgrade. Windows 10 is bandwidth-heavy compared to older OSes, grabs a lot of data from its users unless precautions are taken, and has a slight – but annoyingly noticeable – learning curve
The only thing I don't get, is why the register said that (the part in bold print).

For the record, I am not totally against windows 10, just the way the upgrade process is being handled.

I have done a clean install of Windows 7 using Dell re-installation disk (Dell sent me one). I also use Free Macrium reflect backup and restore.

The only thing I don't get, is why the register said that (the part in bold print).

Because Win 7 and win 8.x are already capable of all that. They still has WMC for viewing recorded TV shows and movies. They do not require dealing with a learning curve since the user already knows how to use their present OS and browsers. They do not force potentially faulty or otherwise undesirable updates upon the user. They do not spy on you to the same degree Win 10 does.

The heavy handed upgrade process is only a part of the issues I have with *&^%$#@! MSpy, which are not limited to just Win 10. Trying to sneak in additional spyware onto Win 7 and Win 8.x is another huge issue.

There is this perception here that there are millions of W7 users who are up in arms about what MS is doing. No doubt there is a substantial number, but not enough for MS to see it as a ground swell. MS is going by the numbers ... 110 million converts (the LOVE-us group) and a small group of MS malcontents (Luddites to them) who protest anything new. I really do believe they go to meetings and have a belly laugh over the 'so-called' outrage that the bloggers and forums produce. Compare the numbers. MS will no doubt loose customers - and MS says, so what! Get real, MS is not concerned about losing a few hundred 'Luddites' to Linux or a few hundred ship rats to Apple. MS is concerned about the W7/W8 holdouts who are there for the plucking.

The W7 install base is huge and a good percentage of them are not aware of what is going on. MS categorize them as not outraged and receptive. When the install W10 hits their systems as a recommended update most will just accept the EULA question - MS is counting on it. Another 1 billion new W10 subscribers LOVING Microsoft. It is tough to argue with such overwhelming numbers. MS will say the users 'chose' to accept the free upgrade - the rest is just manufactured outrage.

Really, which part? They have already tried it once and said they were sorry we did it in error!!! Now Microsoft are saying we are going to offer the OS upgrade in 2016. Six months later with Microsoft's recent behavior I would suggest they are going to insist non domain (so basically home users) are forced to upgrade and like I said you logon and accept the EULA and bam bam (Flintstones) you have Windows 10.
Not hard to believe at all. Planed strategy.
I leave my machines on 24/7 perhaps I need to reconsider that strategy so I don't end up on 10 without my permission.:sarc:

Well, I am using it on my Dell 1545 laptop and it has many redeeming features. I am not a stickler on how it looks or operates most versions work okay. However, our two other PCs have NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 on-board graphic chips and Windows 10 will not install. They have left the billions of us out here with such graphics systems out in the cold and it appears to me they could care less about it. Guess we wait, huh?

I should not post a fix for you as I hate to lose another Windows 7 user but there are indeed drivers for your video system on your laptop. See here:

NVIDIA compatibility issue with Windows 10 (Solved) - Ivan Ridao Freitas

You need to burn a DVD to install windows 10. It will by pass the video card check.

This one of the reasons Nutella scares me: "Today, we live in a mobile-first, cloud-first world...". The clown has to have his head stuffed in the cloud (and somewhere if he really believes that. In the universe I live in, the majority of people do not have access to affordable, unlimited internet.

Jeannie,
The world we live in
is not mobile first cloud first world. That is what Microsoft would like but they missed that boat and Apple and Google have that sown up with Android and istuff. It would be better for Microsoft if they tried to keep the clients they have rather than alienate them. They have the desktop market and they are throwing it away. They are successfully turning the family geeks into Microsoft haters from people who used to promote Microsoft products. Those who use iphones and android phones are unlikely to switch to a windows phone. Even the subsidiary of M$ Nokia is planning a Android device. Microsoft has always been an evil company and pushed itself unfairly by stealing innovations and extinguishing other creators of software (that list is a mile long) well now it is their turn and Microsoft brought it on themselves.

Interesting how it has never happened with any of the other 200+ W7 updates (on my PC).

What makes you think you'll be able to login before the EULA appears?

Trouble is Layback Bear did not use the bullsh*t speak in riddles with words like they have swallowed a scientific dictionary. You know "Going forward" "Monetize" "Customer Experience" and so forth.............
I think you may have meant marketing dictionary. :)

Jeannie,
The world we live in is not mobile first cloud first world. I totally agree with you. It's curious that the phone company MSpy bought was the one I had problems with a few years ago.

About 5 or 6 months ago I bought a new computer and specifically bought this one because I wanted Windows 7, not 8 and absolutely not 10. I will do whatever I have to do to stay on Windows 7. If it means not doing any more updates so be it. I already have Windows updates off and do it manually. If it means I have to completely block MS from my system so be it, I'm not sure how to do that yet but I'll figure it out. It's not that I dislike Windows 10 I've never tried it and don't want to. I just like Windows 7. I'm old and crotchety and not ready to change. I'll take my chances with a non patched Win 7 before I'd move to 10. If you like 10 that's great. Be happy with it.

MS seems to have decided that no matter what I want they are going to give me v10 even if they have to shove it down my throat, or other places.

My Internet speed at my present location is not much above a half a MB per second, sometimes slower. It's a little better in other places but I'll be here for the winter. A 5 GB cap no matter where I am and $0.45 a MB when I go over 5 GB. I am not going to be using Cloud anything ever. I still live in the reality of one step above dial up speed. I won't risk getting a download of 6 GB (3 GB for each machine) for Windows 10 plus the 1 GB updates I hear about, it would take days. Let alone paying for Windows 10 with my data.

I hope something knocks MS off their high and mighty horse and soon. I apologize if you are offended and for my attitude but this MS crap is just ticking me off big time. Leave me alone with my Windows 7 until it's EOL, or mine, which ever comes first. That's the deal MS offered when I bought it and I accepted it. I'm happy right where I am.

I do not recommend anyone do what I do, it's my risk and I accept that.

I vote for LayBack Bear for MS CEO. Having said that, my vote and 5 bucks may get you a cup of coffee somewhere, probably 6 bucks if they know you have my vote.

M$ has already got a strangle hold on business sector.

Or is it just mainly the "insider Group" ?

Thrash and everyone I can tell you as a fact I never reserved Windows 10 and I had removed numerous Windows 7 updates pertaining to Windows 10 and set the registry to not upgrade. I still am a Windows 10 insider and have 10 on 4 virtual machines so no need to reserve OS.. My settings on Windows update were set to Download Updates and let me install them. My four main machines had three of the computers on Patch Tuesday October 12th offered reboot to install updates and download and install Windows 10 on one of the machines and Lets get started and install on the other 3 as they had already downloaded the 10 OS files, drivers and updates. The Windows Update settings were changed to download and install. This is a fact and numerous others suffered the same fate. It was basically shut down and install Windows 7 updates and also start the Windows 10 upgrade process or start installing Windows 10 now. I was about to go to bed at 10 PM and I was up till 2AM removing the offending patches and fixing this crap. Boy I was mad as feck about what M$ did.
Basically if you did not know what to do you would have ended up with 10 either on the next reboot or starting the install there and then.
I get really miffed when others say this cannot happen as I know damn well it can as it happened to me.:devil2::mad2::axe::geek::D

OK now just took some more pain pills......
