My desktop PC is running Windows 7 Professional. The machine has not been connected to the internet for over 2 years.

My question is... if I connect to the internet I assume Windows will begin the process of installing all of the updates since it was last online. Will there be issues with this because of the time lag?

I'm also concerned about the effect the update process will have on various programs as Windows updates. Should I expect problems?

All positive input appreciated

Hi, I would sugest you take an Image of the PC as it is before you start.
Here is a tutorial on Imaging with Macrium.
Then go to the MS Update Cataloge and download the folowing KB's for your bit rate of Windows I.E x86 or x64.
First (KB3020369) is a prerequisite to install the roll up package
Second (KB3125574) is a roll up package to reduce the total umber of updated needed at the end
Third (KB3102810) will help with the high CPU usage during updates
Fourth (KB3112343) is the update client first release
Fifth (KB3172605) is the next release
Sixth (KB3161664) is the September 2016 update client release

Run them in the order stipulated and reboot if it asks for it.
This will allow your PC to Update as there has been issues with Update Clients since your last update period.

I personally would then advise you to install only security Updates and hide optional updates however that is up to you.
