Having just gotten a new machine with Windows 7 I was resetting the update setting and unchecked the Microsoft products update box. I thought I could reset it later but now its missing altogether. I still want to get update notices on the office suite. Have I lost that ability and if so how do I get it back?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do you want to turn on Automatic Updates which you accidentally turned off? Or do you want to install specific updates?

To turn it on, navigate to:
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings
There should be a drop down box in which the option to automatically update your computer software/drivers is present. There are also a number of other options that you may find useful.

To install specific updates:
To turn it on, navigate to:
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update
Click 'Check for updates'. From their, you can select various optional and critical updates to install.

Hope that helps. :)

If you go to the Change Settings window, there is an option for "Microsoft Updates" that says it will look for updates for Microsoft products. Once that box is unchecked it asks one of those "are you sure" types of questions and if you click on yes it not only unchecks it, its gone completely and you can't even change your mind apparently.

Can you please give me a screenshot of what happens after you uncheck the box and click yes in the pop-up message?

Also, try this.
Once again navigate to:
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Change settings
Uncheck whatever you want to uncheck but also select an option from the drop down box. Click the OK button and tell me what happens.

You might try going to http://www.update.microsoft.com and see if that doesn't trigger an option to turn on Microsoft Updates. No guarantees, but I had a similar situation to yours and visiting that website allowed me to get Microsoft Updates back again.
