Microsoft just might fool us all by changing the Windows 7 release date after its fiasco with Vista. Company insiders say CEO Steve Ballmer is pressing to ship the operating system for late September.

I'd rather wait a few months from that still to see any other possible bugs resolved before seeing the retail version out too soon and end up being a fiascle. I'm still waiting for the final SP2 for Vista to come out.

It wouldn't surprise me if it's released early september. Build 7022 doesn't have too many bugs that I've noticed and it's only March 1st. Six months is plenty of time.

I would like to think thats plenty of time but who knows, it could be sooner.

Fiasco with Vista? I mean if 250+ million copies sold and 20% marketshare after so much FUD is considered a fiasco then thats some high expectations. Compared that with the Tech media's reaction when they have a collective iGasm over every .1% bump in marketshare Apple reports.

If they gave Vista a honest chance they wouldn't be so blown away by Seven IMO.

I ran the RC1 for Vista for a period of time and then simply waited for the 1/31/07 release about 4 months later. The only disappointment seen with Vista so far is no updated softwares for things like existing tv tuners cards.

You see a Vista driver update while there's a list of problems seen when going to record anything while the original driver works well on 7 along with Vista as far as picture and sound. When 7 comes out I wouldn't expect too much there for 3rd party support besides the few main companies like ATI, NVidia for video and Creative already seeing 7 beta drivers for sound.

Mind you, I'm going to wait a little bit before rushing out and getting my copy, just in case of any possible hiccups that may come with launch.

Not that I expect any sort of disaster or anything.
I've never purchased a fresh new OS.
Hell, I just recently installed my own copy of Vista a couple of weeks ago.

Having run Vista in RC1 form and now 7 still in beta I found the beta runs far better and should see some additional implrovements in the RC release since the 7 timeline seems to have stepped up considerably. Yet I've being Vista along with XP since that first came and simply added the two service packs SP1 and SP2 beta on without a glitch.

Build 6801 didn't have to many bugs either. I've tested 7022, in fact its on another partition but I boot up every time into 7000 because the issues I have with that are no worse than 95 - 98 - 2000 - me - xp - vista. As a matter of fact I'd go as far as sayin its better than all of them, especially when they were at this stage of development. I would never go back to any of those builds, EVER!

@Night Hawk to be honest with you I think it's a waste of time and money to be investing in vistas' sp2, I think all their efforts and coin should be employed elsewhere.

You forget that there will be a lot of people that do not have they money nor the inclination to go for a new o/s. They should get the SP2 package.

Just because we all want it and want it now doesn't mean that everybody is of the same mind.

One day i'll buy another box and win7 will be included. Till then i'm not going to spend $$$$ just fro some extra eyecandy and a few minor changes.

SP2 Final? Isn't Vista SP2 still in beta form?

Well technically that's not final, just Release Candidate, it could change before final. On that note, how is it? Do you notice a difference in speed?

ok, technically it might change, but not really in areas that matter.

Well speed. I don't do benchmarks which to me reflect only the way how well your box does a benchmark.

I did notice a very significant change in processor load on idle however.

Whereas Vista SP1 ran quite hot on idle with an average load of 15% (all kinds of utilities installed, Deskscapes running HD dream) running Win7 in dualboot showed an average idle load of 3% with most utilities also running (without Deskscapes, doesn't install) and 5% running standard dreamscenes. The core temp differed by 5 C.

After the first few batches of sp2 idle load actually increased. The latest RC build however gives me about the same result as win7.

What that does for speed i cant tell, (you'd need a microtimer to measure) but it sure shows that sp2 contains win7 optimizations.

I'm not a speedjockey, and fail to notice a realistic everyday usage difference in speed/snappiness between the 2.

If anything the added layer in the W7 gui slows me down. Cant really appreciate f.e. the Libraries, just another layer of mud to wade through.

By the same analogy you could also say that SP3 for XP should have never been released. Yet that contains some 1,000+ fixes for the older version there with plenty of people still staying with that version having refused to upgrade or backed away from Vista.

2000 saw SP4 for the even older version seen there before support was dropped. NT 4.0 saw an SP6. What you are suggesting there is that MS should instantly drop support for their presently latest version before 7 is even out by the sound of that.

Sorry I still have XP and Vista on here even with both 7 betas installed. Once someone finally comes out with something that will actually capture video in Vista and 7 then I'll be parting ways with XP entirely especially for the next build to come.
