Although Windows 8.1 was officially launched last month, it looks like many things still need to be fixed to attract more users. Apparently Microsoft is also aware of that as the company is preparing a major update expected to be unveiled in early 2014.

If MS actually listened to it's customers feed back from the get go, - actually released a 'beta' with the intent on listening to feedback rather than just "doing it their way regardless" and releasing "Previews" whilst still ignoring feedback - they wouldn't be in this ridiculous mess they are now. They listened a bit with Seven's development. Official betas and non official. With 8 they completely ignored all consumer feedback

What a flap up of major proportions.

It's the consumer who should dictate major product features. Not some executives with a "vision"

This type of thread is also running on the W8 Forums -- obviously some updates need to be done - but a NEW version so soon after W8 and W8.1 -- businesses can never move this quick - stuff needs to be tested etc and this can take YEARS so I'd expect that if this IS true W7 just got itself another LONG lease of life - especially in the corporate sector.

Bring back a native start screen and not that Metro screen with "START" plastered on it as if we are stupid, its an insult to IT people and normal users alike IMO. To me, start screen isn't a deal breaker, I've become more comfortable with Win8 although I still prefer Win7 or I'll simply go up to Server 12 R2 and customize that to fit my needs.

But as far as the average user goes and Win8' overall success/failure goes... just bring back a legitimate start menu and all their problems go away. Win 8 has some great features, just give the people what they want Microsoft...

I don't think that's always the case, but when someone/something begins making changes aimlessly without revisiting results is for sure some thing bad!!!

And Windows 8 is precisely that, a mass change from everything previously known.
Since Win1, Windows has been a desktop OS, Win8 is for tablets.
For updates, all minor updates where in place, at most requiring a reboot, now it requires a full reinstall. Don't believe that "8.2" or even 8.1 were major versions, they're just service packs!!!
Since always, the user could install programs in any way they want, downloading from official sites, CDs or whatever, now for some things you are forced to pass by their "Windows Store", once again copy-pasting Apple, the worst things this time.
It always has been targeted towards the enterprise and even average user, now it's focused on "gadgets" and toys instead of something more practical.

Sadly, Win8 contains some nice improvements, but the totally crippled UI, far more more than in any other Windows version (even Vista/7), tons of REMOVED featuers, and un-usability changes make it impractical for most users. Forcing to reinstall to apply a service pack is even more insulting.

On the bright side, that's a great promotion for Windows 7! Even Linux and Mac will benefit

Things were much better with those service pack updates.

Until happens - it's hard to say. It all depends on what they change this time.

Try compatibility mode for the driver's installer. The driver itself most likely would work as is, because the kernel is exactly the same (Vista, 7, 8, 2008 and 2012 all are Windows 6.X after all).
I've done that for installing drivers for Win7 into Win8 beta when testing it, no problem beyond the installer complaining about wrong version, after compatibility mode it worked as it should.

Until happens - it's hard to say. It all depends on what they change this time.

Earlier once you get the drivers, you knew that you are set for 3 years till the next major OS version come along.
I got my XPS in 2011 with windows 7. Then next year 8 came out and Dell provided full support for 8. But now 8 drivers aren't working with 8.1 and i don't think Dell is gonna bother with this old laptop now. They have long list of currently being sold laptops to provide support to.
If it would have been Windows 8 SP1, i didn't have to worry about anything.
Releasing 8.1 so quick means all the software development done for 8 is useless now?? what a waste.

Have also bought an Inspiron 5520 in 2012 and a 5521 in 2013 for home use. Both got drivers for 8.1. But if 8.2 again required new drivers, i am sure 5520 will be left behind and only 5521 will get official support.

have tried that. Some are working, while some drivers i got from Intel/Nvidia websites, still few drivers having hiccups.

Well i am a Windows 7 user anyway, just trying to point out the situation microsoft is putting its customers into.

And my sector. I committed to Win 7 until just before 2020 after I first saw Win 8. Whatever M$ does after this is too little, too late.
