Microsoft wins, even if the PC loses

I am simply stunned by the ridiculous number of "Microsoft will be dead in four years" stories, following Gartner's grim PC forecast three days ago. I offered brief analysis then and promised something later, and this is it. Yesterday, colleague Alan Buckingham posted first: "Microsoft is nowhere near death's door" -- and he absolutely is right.

Throw a rock, and you can't miss a doom-and-gloom armchair analysis. Among the many are "Gartner: Microsoft is dead, Windows has expired, Office has ceased to be" (Computerworld); "How long can Microsoft go on like this?" (InfoWorld); "Apple's ultimate victory over Microsoft" (Motley Fool); and "Gartner may be too scared to say it, but the PC is dead" (ReadWrite). For the most part, all these armchair pundits are mistaken. Hugely.

MS is nowhere near dead what so ever. Also they do not need to worrie about MAC also they would need to worrie more about linux at this stage than MAC :roflmao:

I don't think Microsoft is dead, but colossal screwups like W8 sure doesn't help much.

I actually envision an IBM scenario: They will live to die another day, but MS will simply lose any relevance in the ever-evolving IT world. IBM used to be a household name that commanded a lot of influence, but nowadays the last time I'd prominently heard of IBM outside of those "in-the-know" was the debut of Watson on Jeopardy! several years back.

Even my sister, who is only 7 years younger than me, doesn't seem to realize or care about the significance IBM has had in the history of computers.

I fully suspect something similar for MS if they don't change course.

Gartner again -- we all know how useless they are.
If Gartner says Ms is doomed -- Go out at once and buy some stock in Ms (MSFT).

MSFT is only 4 USD below its 52 week high and it's going in the right direction.

I think the human 2 digit finger symbol needs to be pointed at Gartners --they are ALWAYS HOPELESS.

Ms also has quite a few divisions other than Windows -- all doing quite OK.

IBM these days still has a few scientific labs but it's primarily a service company now -- nothing like its great history --however it is still also doing quite nicely as a blue chip stock so as a business evolves some succeed (IBM) while others like KODAK, AGFA etc Fail and we shall see what AAPL(Apple) looks like in a few months--the future isn't very promising for it at all.

MS pretty much extended that Apple did with their iOS for smartphones and tablets, adding the same interface to the PC. They have ample time for correcting this mistake, without loosing much of a market share. At the current time neither Mac, nor Linux has a chance to take over Windows on the PC. It's all about applications and not the OS. When any application will be available on all major OS's, then we can talk about "let the best one win". Until then, MS has the PC market for themselves to loose...
