My Windows Media Player has become corrupted and I am unable to rip music from a cd to the computer. Can I reload just the WMP software from Windows 7 Home Premium installation disc? If so, how?

Hi wbaxter2001,

My name is Uttam from Dell Social Media and community. In response to your query, I suspect that the WMP is corrupted. In order to correct it you can make use of windows troubleshooter which will help you to fix the corrupted files for WMP. Also you can try reinstalling by performing following steps.

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Select 'Turn Windows Features On Or Off' on the left
Media features > uncheck the WMP box and restart the computer

Go back to the same location, reselect WMP box and again restart the computer. Do let me know for further queries.

Regards,

The easiest thing to do would be to go to Start>Control Panel> Programs and features>Turn Windows Features On/Off and untick WMP, then restart and do the same thing and tick it back. Tell us if it works.

Tried it - no joy. Checked Microsoft help sites - no joy. My rip disc icon is visible but is grayed out and I cannot access it. Could this be a registry problem? If so, what is the solution?

Try this
  1. Open Windows Media Player.
  2. Go to Tools -> Options -> Devices.
  3. Select CD/DVD burner and choose Advanced.
  4. Place a checkmark on “Use error correction”.

I am using WPM 12. Do not have "CD/DVD burner as an option under tools -> options -> devices. As I said, my b\riop disc icon is GRAYED OUT (not available) when listening to a CD. I have not found any help on Microsoft Forums or elsewhere. Is it possible to download just the WPM software from the Windowd 7 OS disc I have tried to reload the OS using the correct malfunctioning items (don't know the correct title, but it is not install OS). No Joy anywhere. I may have to go to the Microsoft help and pay them an exorbitant price to tell me how to fix the problem. As a "work around" I have installed a separate disc rip program, but this does not download into WPM.

I don't think there is a way to just re install it. Try this though,
1. Open WMP
2. Click Organize>Options
3. Select Devices, and click your CD/DVD Drive
4. Click Properties
5. Click Use Error Correction, Then click apply, then ok, and see if it works.

UBUNTURULES: Thanks for all the suggestions, but having tried all of them including restoring registry to a previous date (unable to restore computer to an earlier date because of corruptions as a result of deleting "errors" from my computer as "found" by computer cleanup software that I use. I guess the only real cure is to reload the OS. Oh well, I can live with it LOL.

Sorry I couldn't help. I'll keep searching though. If I find something, I'll tell you.
