Microsoft's Abandoned Ideas For Windows 7

Microsoft's (MSFT) upcoming Windows 7, widely expected to debut later this year, is already being hailed as a well-performing, competent, if conservative release. Think of Windows 7 as something like Windows 98 -- it does what its predecessor should have done without introducing any major changes.
But that doesn't mean Microsoft wasn't considering some radical ideas during the Windows 7 design process. Techradar went to Microsoft's MIX conference in Vegas earlier this month, and comes back with some early ideas for Windows 7 we're largely glad didn't make it into the final cut.

Thanks Barman 58,

there is a link on that page to this :

Vista foundation hasn't gone away—if you couldn't stand Vista's UI (whether it's because you didn't like Explorer, Aero, Control Panel, UAC, or anything else), Windows 7 is unlikely to do much to help, as it builds on the same UI. If Vista's hardware demands were too steep, Windows 7 will likely cause you the same grief, as its hardware demands match. And if Vista didn't work with a program or device you need to use, Windows 7 will offer no salvation, as its compatibility is virtually identical.

That's fine by me - I like Vista.

+1 Vista works great for me.

Yeah I agree.

I never understood why everyone hated it so much. I only noticed it was kind of crappy when people tried to upgrade to it from a 5+ year old computer...

Hi there -- please don't read this post as being aggressive -- not meant to be --merely "informative" --at least I hope it is.

This topic has been repeated "ad Nauseam" -- two main issues why vista didn't work originally -- not necessarily 100% Microsoft's fault but MS wasn't guiltless either.

1) Vista was released too early and was pre-installed on unsuitable hardware.

2) Computers got into the habit of being delivered without the VISTA install disk -- retail or OEM version.

Now if you've ever bought a computer from a store you know that there's so much crap and adware installed on it you want to do a clean install and start again to get rid of all the junk.

Also you couldn't optimise the OS because if you needed to re-install it all you had was the manufacturers recovery disk -- which if it worked at all would then re-install all te original crap and adware on it.

Now a few years later the hardware is better and SP1 (and SP2) are out there so VISTA will run better -- however the damage has already been done so MS needs a new product which will run more "leanly" on a wide range of hardware.

There weren't many "Upgraders" to VISTA who had older hardware and found XP running very nicely. Some but not a significant number -- and these people had proper install disks so they could adjust their systems properly.

Cheers
jimbo

I think most of the Vista problems were related to old computer attempting to run it without success so of course the misinformed put the blame on Vista instead of their 10 year old computer which was the real problem. I had zero problems with Vista once the UAC deal was taken care of. Windows 7 is just a nicer looking system with some very cool upgrades.

They also shouldn't allow the pc makers to install all that BS advertising software onto an otherwise nice clean Operating system. That stuff is nothing more than adware and really needs to be outlawed. It's no wonder I build my own computers using a nice clean installation disk.

HP,Dell,Gateway,Sony and the others are all guilty of installing adware on all their customers computers and ruining an otherwise good user experiance. None of those companies should be allowed to build computers because of this. I'll never buy a name brand PC again as long as I live. :D

lol, that vista-ish taskbar maximized looked crappy...
anyway, i think that the GUI that it already has it's just fine... they should concentrate more on not repeating the same mistakes they did with vista rather than making a new eye-candy that'll be bad reviewed.
anyway, in my opinion those bad words about vista were kind of exaggerated, 'cuz it really wasn't that bad. i had more than a chance to try it at it's full potential, both on x86 and x64, and it didn't have all those bugs that people mentioned. (it was SP1 installed, though)
keep up the good job MS, and try not to leak an infinite builds until releasing a "complete" one, at least equivalent with a service pack. at this rate, those who prefer installing a fresh copy will loose their data over and over again, i hate this kind of stuff...
nevermind, i'll just go back to the apple freaks to ask them when the 10.5.7 update will be released.
Cheers!
