Hi

After just 13 months my 500GB WD HDD has come up with fault code! I have ordered a new one. I have software on my current HHD which has licences etc., and would really like a solution whereby I can clone the current disk and replace that image onto the new disc without having to reinstall everything. Any ideas?

TIA

Laptop or Desktop? If Desktop you can mount the new drive as a 2nd drive in the computer then use Macrium Reflect Free to clone the old to the new.

Laptop, you can mount the new drive in a external enclosure or buy a Universal USB hard drive adapter to connect the new drive via a USB port then use Macrium. I just bought this:

Newer Technology UNIVERSAL DRIVE ADAPTER USB 3.0 INTR

Does anybody know if Acronis True Image (30 day free trial) will do the job?

Yes, ATI has a very good Clone tool. That's what I normally use but I've had Acronis forever (so it seems).

I suspect I know the answer to this question but I'll ask it hoping I am wrong.

When my new HDD arrives I'd like to install the W7 OS from scratch and then I'd like to copy / image / clone across all the software with all the licences; is that possible?

No.

You can't copy software that requires installation.

You can clone the whole Win7 installation, though.

Western Digital makes a free version of Acronis True Image available for download. I don't know the limitations of that version.

I recommend it. The Manual is easy to understand and on the Download page.
