first of all . thanks barefoot kid. :D what would be the better initalization mbr or gpt?
hard drives are 1tb each showing up as basic unallocated 931.5gb raw.

would recommend mbr or gpt?:).

thinking about mbr. isn't that a ntfs format old master boot record type.
would win7 run better on gpt?

anyone have a suggestions.
thanks

I would recommend you stick with MBR.

+1.

Stick with MBR.

Now I have a question.

Was this an oversight?

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
If you boot drives > 2TB then consider GPT.
I have a high end ASUS motherboard with UEFI BIOS and still use MBR. My rationale is to avoid possible compatability problems at this stage of UEFI rollout and I don't want large OS drives.

im trying to initialize IDE drives, Mini Partition would not let me ..

It tells me that disk drive is NOT READY. what does it mean?

Im running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and trying to work on a 40 and an 80 GB Western Digital IDE drives which i am trying to re format and partition using a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Hard Drive Adapter. The unit is a Sabrent USB-DSC5.

The HD is recognized as Disk 6 (I have a bunch of other disks: 2 inside the PC tower and 4 other inside an External Enclosure) So the Disk 6 is actually a 7th Disk. There is a little yellow mark saying that it needs to be initialized. When I try initializing using one of the 2 options MBR or GPT it tells me that the disk is not ready and hangs up on me.

Any ideas, explanations suggestions, instructions would be greatly appreciated.
If so please in layman language and if at all possible in point blank form as in steps 1...2 3...etc. -as im not too savvy on these computer software issues-.

Thank you kindly

Check the power & data cables, also check that USB port is working.

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.

Have you tried to Initialize in Disk mgmt, by rightclicking the Disk listing (e.g. Disk 6) in the box to the left of the drive map after scrolling down to the Disk?

You would get more help if you'd started your own thread as this one is marked Solved.

mswhip; quester12 here, the first thing i would check is : where is the sabrent usb to ide connected? direct to a usb port on the computer ; or a hub? hubs do not work as efficently as a direct connect.

shut down or soft restart your PC . connect the usb cable to the pc's usb; then connect the hard drive to the adapter; both ide and power .

however before connecting your hd ; check for master set or slave or cable; on the back of ide drives are usually a shunt; you may have to remove that shunt in order for it to initialize that drive.

as gregrocker suggested .... please start another thread thank you.
