Hibernation off

On my PC, it was under 10 gig.
Much less than Vista Ultimate 64.

When the hackers get done with it, it will be even smaller.;)

Hi mad emperor,

If you need to get it smaller than that, you can use vlite to remove Components you don't need - works fine - I have tried it.

I wouldn't mess with any of the other removal/tweaking options , just the Components.

If you use vlite 1.1.6, it works fine as it is - you can also install v1.2 over the top of it.

If you only get v1.2, then you need to download the massive WAIK from M$.

Hello MadEmperor and welcome to Seven Forums.

The minimum requirements for disk space listed to install Windows 7 on is 16 GB for 32-bit and 20 GB for 64-bit Windows 7.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hibernation = one of the best ways I know of to screw up your PC.

SHUT IT OFF!

Then run Disk Cleanup on a regular basis to keep the crapola off of your HD.
I go several steps further, but that's not the topic of this thread.

ROFL, i keep hibernation, im using a laptop, so its fairly handy, it dont matter tho, if i desperatly need the space, ill get rid of it, but my comp boots up at the same speed even if it was from a shutdown OR a Hibernation... so it dont matter :P

Thats just my opinion :)

Using 30 GB SSD for 64bit install

Brink,

I'm using a Vertex 2 30GB SSD now as the boot drive for my current 32 bit Windows 7 install and so far it has used 25GB. I want to use another 30 GB Vertex 2 on a new build and plan to use 64 bits this time. I see you said it should take 20 GB... Do you think I'll be safe using the 30 GB SSD - will be sufficient to contain growth that might occur? I recently read an article where someone used an 80GB SSD and said the Windows 7 64bit install took all but 43GB.

Thanks for your help, Noel

Hello Noel,

Sorry, but a 30 GB drive will just be to small for the 64-bit Windows 7 to be able to function and have any space left to install anything else. It depends on what all you want to install on it other than 64-bit Windows 7, but I would recommend no smaller than 50 GB. :(

Brink,

Thanks. I don't plan to put anything else on it but the OS. I puts all my apps and other items on separate HDDs, so maybe I could squeak by? If not, I'll stay with 32 bits and make that do.

If I did use a 30GB and went with 64 bits, would it take a clean install to go back to 32 bits? I'm presuming yes, but since I've never done that, thought I'd ask anyway...

Thanks again, Noel

Noel,

You would be cutting it real close with only a 30GB HDD for 64-bit Windows 7. You could give it a try, but it may or may not work with so little free space left to be allocated for the page file, hibernation, system protection, etc....

Yes, unfortunately it would require a clean install to go from 32-bit to 64-bit, or 64-bit back to 32-bit.
