Minutes per GB on SD card

Am going overseas shortly and want to get one of those little hand held video recorders. Now I have seen one that has a 120GB hard drive in it but way too expensive for me so I thought about using one that takes those Sandisk Ultra SD cards in them.

Someone did mention I would get about six minutes per GB on a card and so a 32GB card would last me about 3 hours of video. But that seems a lot to me so am I being told porkies?

I have had look on the local shop site and I found these

I was wondering whether someone knows much about these (never had one before) and let me know what they think of them and would like to keep below the $300 mark if possible and it doesn't have to be real flashy

Nope, sorry have absolutely no experience with either. My sister has one of some kind and my brother-in-law is kinda in to that, be seeing them later on this morning/afternoon. I'll see what he recommends. Have a great trip, business or pleasure?

John, a lot depends on what video compression the camcorder uses, mpeg4, AVI, mkv, etc. Recording id full HD will take a lot more capacity too. Here's one thought.

I know a 32 GB SD card can store 2 hrs 40 min recording My son had a Samsung not sure of the model number as it was some time ago but i know he was very pleased with it . Also think the 2hrs and 40 min was in full HD.

I think 2hr 40 min would be right with a full HD camera recently bought a Fuji Digital cam with full HD panoramic view etc it has listings of what it will do in terms of battery life and full use on a good charge

I would think 2x 32 GB SD would be more then enough to get the job done also if you are taking any type of Laptop along for the trip I assume you can just transfer the Video on your down time so you don't have to keep making sure you have space

But it says here in full 1080 it is 40 GB per hour meaning if your going to do full HD instead of 720 might want to invest in 64GB SD

So (8GB / 2.8GB/HR) = approximately 2.86 hours. This is all dependent upon the resolution and compression used by the camcorder. High definition will yield approximately 1/4th the time per GB; 11~12GB/HR.

However, uncompressed the numbers are staggering: HD 1080 40GB/HR vs 13.5GB/HR DV.

On my Kodak Zi8 which is a Pocket HD Camcorder, the indicative recording times that appears as the remaining time, the following are the shooting times for a freshly formatted and empty 8GB SD card.

HD 16:9 1920x1080 @30fps 67 minutes
HD 16:9 1280x 720 @60fps 63 minutes
HD 16:9 1280x 720 @30fps 78 minutes
WVGA 16:9 848x480 @30fps 126 minutes

These are only indicative figures and as indicated by Britton30 it will all depend upon the compression performed in the processing and can differ from camcorder to camcorder. You may have to look into each camcorder specs/user manual/reviews/user blogs to be specific.

I never wanted to go in for a prosumer camcorder (cost factor ) and chose Kodak Zi8 Pocket after a lot of research. ( When it came on sale at Office Max, USA for USD 80 in 2011, I rushed in and grabbed one. Next week it was USD 70. So again I crashed in and got USD 10 credited to my card.) I am totally satisfied with the beautiful video it shoots and during my two week trip to Switzerland, Italy and France last year, I carried it with 2 spare 8GB cards , batteries and a small charger.. ( I did not carry my laptop) Most video clips were only 30 to 40secs

Now why I am telling this is that you may also look into Pocket HD camcorders for casual at the same time more than adequate HD quality shooting. I do not know however which one is the ruling king now. What all I know is you have a tough task ahead.

Make sure the cam you get supports a 32GB SD card, some only will support up to 16GB.

Thanks everyone and yes the trip is pleasure going to see my family in the UK my Dad probably for the last time.

But hey those time sound ok to me like it is not that I going to film Ben Hur or something just capture a few moments here and there .

Oh and Gary yes mate I'll checkout that capacity of the thing first. The place I go to fo this sort of stuff is really good on the tech side. So if the Samsung come up ok then I'll get it.

Ok have found the camera I can just afford a bit more than I was going to but the dealer reckons it is a good quality lens in this.

The camera dealer reckons I would get about 8 hours form 16GB SD card so I am going with that.

Good choice John, I like the 25X optical zoom. It records HD in MPEG4-AVC/H.264 format which is fairly compressed and should playback OK for you. You may need to install the VLC Player if you don't have it.

Thanks Gary I was beginning to wonder if I had picked the right one as I saw it in another store for $100 less but as usual they didn't have it in stock - I suppose to draw one in and then sell you what they do want to sell you one of.

Now you have lost me with all that MPEG4?AVC?H.264 stuff as I think you knew you would LOL!! But as long as it takes video and plays back I shall work it out.

The VLC mate I think I have got it on one of the machines

If you are - a much cheaper option -- get a 2TB passport self powered ext USB drive. Now copy your video file to it and then use VLC player to play the video.

The 2TB drive only costs around 100 USD and is a better solution IMO than getting a "Hand held Video recorder" --whatever that is -- sounds like a camcorder.

If the 2TB one is too expensive you can get 1 TB drives or even 500GB drives. Even a 500GB drive can hold a lot of video -- you won't I'm sure on your overseas trip be spending a lot of time in a hotel watching video.

No I wasn't Jim but what I was thinking of doing is using my brothers machine to download to either some sticks or I can take one of the several externals I have here. I have a couple of 32GB SD cards so I should get a fair bit on them as it is

No mate won't be in a hotel either I like self catering accommodation so I can feel like I am at home - all cluttered and untidy - until I go of course LOL!!

I've got another suggestion -- download the video to a micro sd card in a PHONE and you can play the multi-media on an external TV with a micro USB===>HDMI cable for the phone.

(You can even play the stuff on the phone - but the screens are usually a bit small for watching video for any length of tme).

I've found this a very easy way -- I'm sure you've got a phone. The media player works fine on Android phones so you don't need a Windows phone to do this.

Err might be a tad difficult Jim I only have an old Samsung A12 that I keep for emergencies I'm not real good with that new stuff

As for the Army he he they certainly are something else eh
