I recently tried to install a second hard drive for a dual boot so I could boot to xp.
I have a sata drive in it now the drive I intalled was an ide into the ide port. I rebooted to the cd drive with xp. It told me the drive was a removable drive and couldn't install it. I turned off machine unplugged drive but forgot to unplug ide cable from port. tried to reboot bact to win 7 got missing bcd file. I tried to reinstall win 7 with backup restore disks I made, still have same problem missing bcd. Tried the system repair but it asks for install disk & doesn't work with backup disk. What can I do without shipping system back to manufacturer?

Try unplugging all other HD's besides Win7, burn and boot the Win7 Repair CD, mark Win7 partition active using DISKPART as failed XP install attempt may have stolen the active flag: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/71432-partition-mark-active.html

Next boot the Repair CD, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to repair or rewrite the MBR to Win7: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.html?ltr=S

Follow this to correctly dual boot with XP: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html

If you have any further questions, post back info from DISKPART "List disk" and "Detail Disk," or Win7 Disk Management drive map using Snipping Tool in Start Menu.
