Missing compatibility tab?

I'm trying to install some software that doesn't recognize windows 7 as an OS older than xp or 2000, so I figured I'd set the installer to compatibility with vista or xp or something, and after half an hour of looking, I realized I no longer had compatibility mode anywhere under properties of any icon, installer, program, etc.

... help?

Does this have anything to do with a recent update or anything?

Software was Gizmo
Build Windows 7 RC1
HP DV6000

if you type "run programs made for previous versions of windows" in start menu search, does it give you any result, and if it does, are you able to run that application to run programs in compatibility mode?

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 build 7600
I get an error

Package ID: PCWDiagnostic
Path: C:\Windows\Diagnostics\System\PCW
Error code: 0x80070002
Source: Engine
User: ***\***
Context: Restricted

I thought that last line was an admin permission issue, but I have no option to run that program in admin mode.

Hey,
Could you post the Name of the application?

Currently I'm thinking you don't have a .exe file (application) or that the software has been IDed as something that won't run on 7 even under compatiablity.

If you open C:\Windows\diagnostics\system\PCW , do you see DiagPackage.diagpkg ?

Have you tried typing "sfc /scannow" from cmd? (you have to start cmd as administrator)

I don't know where to start, could be a number of things. May be adding some basic info about your computer and programs/tweaks installed could help

I find that file, and when run, it gives us that error I quoted above.

I am running sfc now.

As far as system mods, I haven't done anything much bigger than run litestep once or twice, and then uninstall it.

There is a service that runs the compatibility engine(cant remember its name though )

If SFC doesn't fix it, see if you have the following in System32:

wer.dll

Faultrep.dll

Someone running 7100 should be able to post you copies.

(what bit version? - could you fill out your system specs. please?)

64 bit. Yeah, 7100.

And is that service something like:
PCA SVC
PID: 960
Program Compatability assistant service

?

Because it's running.

Also, both those dll's are there.

Are you the ADMIN? or are you std user...Have you turned off UAC?
did you right click to find run as admin?

I have done all of those things. The running of the program isn't the issue, it's that I cannot run it in compatability mode, the option to is missing compleatly.

Edit: and yes, I am the admin, and have run it in administrator mode, etc etc.

Not sure if you are still having this problem, but I believe it could be a group policy issue.

open gpedit.msc
go to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Troubleshooting and Diagnostics\Application Compatibility Diagnostics\

If those are set to disable, you will not get a compatibility tab.

Regedit can't write into the registry as some keys have been opened by system/other process.

Most of the entries would have been merged - does it make any difference?

Otherwise, you could try a repair install - it is in the tutorial section , but you need the installation media.

No difference -and I haven't even checked what functions do not work giving 0x80070057 error; at least all diagnostics launched from Control Panel do give it. Might do a repair - or restore from a backup.
