So there was a windows 7 update a few days ago, i delayed its installation for 4 hours and went to sleep. When I woke up my Windows 7 appeared as if it was just cleanly installed. Im not sure if i I had to turn on the computer or not. Desktop background was set to the default blue one, aero was turned back on, and all of my desktop icons, including some important files were missing!! Even the My computer icon was not there. Also, since I had multiple tab Firefox and Chrome open before the restart/shut down I expected I would be able to restore the the tabs via the restore previous session option, but nope. It also seemed like Firefox, utorrent and some other programs were reverted back to their original appearance.
My restore points option is turned off, so there were no restore points to go back to and hence make all these changes. What happened, how do I at least get my missing desktop files back?
Thanks alot!

Welcome Dearx to the windows 7 forum.

Could you have updated your video driver? could be the problem. going into safe mode and reverting to the prior video driver.

Other than that, why would you turn the restore options off?

Utorrent could be your problem. Maybe someone doesn't like you.

Other than that, without restore points, you could be out of luck except to restore your backup.

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
Any way to find out what happened to the desktop files? Like use some utility to check whether they have been deleted? Any way to find out if I have been hacked or something if antivirus/spyware software finds nothing? Thanks. Also, forgot to add that even my winamp playlist has been deleted. What could have caused all that?

Hm, is it possible that windows 7 needed during/after the update to revert to some previous system state, but since system restore was off went back to the defauly restore point present after the windows installation?

Up-to-date Avira and Malwarebytes did not find anything, I did full scans. I located my old desktop files they are where they should be c:\users\username but for some reason windows is displaying c:\users\TEMP desktop files. Could it be that Im logged in as a TEMP user although it doesnt exist?
