Missing icons in IE10 Command bar

After getting instability with the IE11 browser on my HP ProBook 455 G2 laptop (Win 7 64 bit) (following a recent massive Microsoft update?) I have uninstalled the browser (which took the machine back to IE8) and then reinstalled IE10 via Windows Update. All is well EXCEPT there are some missing icons in the Command bar!

Specifically the icons for Page, Safety and Tools have been replaced by text. If I invoke the Toolbars > Customise Toolbars dialogue the two lists of icons + text (for Add/Remove) show the same missing icons as blank with adjacent text.

I have rebuilt the main Windows icon file but with no improvement. I guess I need to repair the Internet Explorer icon database but don't know how.

Any help much appreciated as I would like to fix this problem. I have searched for answers elsewhere but with no success so far.

If I am reading this correctly, this is what you have now Capture 1.JPG

And if this is what you want to see Capture.JPG right click on any one of the text, ( Page, Safety, Tools) go down to customize and select show only icons.

Thank you BrightBlessings for your support. You are correct in what I wish to achieve but I find that I cannot right click on the text of items in the Command bar, and in any case the other entries in the Command Bar (Home, Print, rss feeds and Read Mail) are already shown as icons without text. It's just Page, Safety and Tools that are text.

I now suspect that the behaviour of these entries is something to do with the underlying Win 7 build, including the revert to version of IE if IE11 is uninstalled (its IE8 on the PC with the problem but IE10 on the other). This link shows how my Command bar looks on the HP laptop, and was presumably "correct" at the time it was written: Customize the Internet Explorer toolbars - Windows Help but it's not how the bar looks on my Dell running notionally the same Win 7 64 bit, which has all icons as per your target example.

All very strange and not a little worrying as surely the same version of IE10 on both PCs should have EXACTLY the same UI!

Thanks GokAy. I ran the test and found I have a problem related to KB3022345 which I need to repair. Whether this fixes the IE10 issue I doubt. But thanks anyway.

Nah, you are good then. Those 2 files are not actually corrupt but report to be so. You can disregard.

Hi,
Little quirks happen when you skip versions
Traditionally you'd want to download and install all versions as they were released

All of which are still available through the windows update system
You just need to hide 11 and then 10 to get 9
Then unhide 10 and download and install...

I found your problem, it seems you are using Internet Explorer. We here at the NSA have concluded that Internet Explorer is absolute crap. So much so that Microsoft has scrapped it completely in favor of the new Spartan browser.

May I advise you to use FireFox or Google Chrome? You'll be met with faster speeds, a more friendly display, customizable themes and even animated themes if FireFox is the route you take.

Out of all of the web browsers tested in the year 2015, FireFox has rated top among them all, with Google Chrome tailing in second place.

P.S - I know what you did last summer, I'm the NSA, I know everything O_O

Many thanks ThrashZone for your great idea. You're right, I did skip IE9 after I rewound to IE8 after uninstalling a broken IE11. I'll give it a trial today and let you know how it goes.

It might be quicker/easier to just download the standalone installer for IE9, IE10 and IE11

For 64bit OS, a direct link to the EXE installer for:
IE9
IE10
IE11

Problem solved!

ThrashZone you had the right idea!

After uninstalling IE10 and getting back to IE8 I updated to IE9. This still showed the text I didn't want in the Command Bar but in IE9 (and in IE8 I suspect but didn't try) you can right click on a Command Bar icon and then get an extended Customise dialogue which allows choice of all icons, all text, or a mix. I selected 'all icons' and the three missing ones returned (!!) and survived a further update to IE10, where strangely the extended Customise dialogue does not exist.

So I'm now very happy and most grateful for the support.

I should have mentioned that I still don't understand why both my Win 7 PCs running IE11 started becoming unstable after the big 15 July 2015 Windows Update. Both showed IE11 APPCRASHs and curious VC++ termination errors. These seem to have gone away but I am going to stick with IE10 for a while as it has not been a good experience with IE11. At one point the only machine in my home I could rely on was an ancient XP Netbook!

Hi,
I too stick with ie10 so don't feel like the lone ranger ;)
It is to this day the most stable version besides using another browser like Pale moon....

New build I did acts a little differently with ie10 too so this is most likely hardware and or driver related
If you'd like to compare and post both machines browser add-ons make sure your set to Show All add-ons before doing so :)
