Have a read here and see if it gives you any joy. Windows Live Mail 2011: How to Customize the Quick Access Toolbar I'm still using the old WLM without the ribbons so not sure if this is what you mean.

On the top ribbon, in the "View" tab, make sure the "Status bar" option is selected.
