I'm not sure what happened, but some applications and their associated files have lost their icons somehow. Tried looking up some solutions to this, but I haven't found any that worked for me.

Boot into safe mode, then reboot into Windows normally. See if that works.

Hello eft890.

Have a look at the tutorial at the link below to see if it'll solve your issue, be sure to keep us informed.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/49819-icon-cache-rebuild.html?ltr=I

I've tried this method and nothing =(.

Boot into safe mode, then reboot into Windows normally. See if that works.

Also didn't work.

Hi eft890... welcome to sevenforums
try to re-install that program...

I'm trying to find a more efficient way, because it's happening to a lot of programs, not just the office suite.

Hello EFT,

If this is happening to all of your shortcut (LNK file extension) files, then you might see if using the lnk download in the tutorial below may be able to help with this.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I just tried this and it also didn't work, but I see what you're getting at with this one. Problem is, it's not only happening to .lnk's, its also happening to .doc's, .ppt's, .accdb's, etc.

You might consider doing a system restore using a restore point dated right before this started to see if it may be able fix this.

Did you use a cleaning program prior to this incedent? if so check to see if there is a restore point, or even better a .bak file, or any other type of backup file.

For instance in CCleaner, you have the option to back up your registry before you delete un-needed or problematic entries.

Try these.
Method 1.
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Program Options (Program means the name of the program such as Word).
In the Navigation Pane, click Resources. Click Diagnose. Click Continue. Click Start Diagnostics. Let the tool finish then click close.
Method 2.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Programs, and then click Uninstall a Program.
Click the name of the Microsoft Office Edition 2007 you want to change, and then click Change.
Click Repair, and then click Continue.
You may need the Office CD for this.

how about posting a screenshot of where these shortcuts are. i get this if i try to drag certain shortcuts to nexus dock. i endup having to go through the nexus preferences and point to the item i want as a shortcut on the dock. i am sure there are plenty of programs that if you try to create a shortcut in the wrong manner for it will behave like this.

This is a rather weird problem. Never encountered that before. Is there any chance a virus, malware, or any malicious file be doing this?

Try a AV scan. Preferably MSE.

EFT,

You might see if uninstalling and reinstalling the program as Newbie posted earlier may be able to hopefully restore them.

This happens to me once in a while, but only if I delete an icon from the desktop that was installed automaticly during a software install. If you want to uninstall the program you have to get everything associated with it out of the registry or the icon will always look the same ( a blank looking piece of paper )

This is something someone new to computing should never attempt.

Using CCleaner, you can do this. Doesn't take a genius to figure out on how to clean up the registry with CCleaner. If you want to be sure, when you clean up the registry, it will ask you before to back-up if any errors do occur. I do that all the time, even though I don't need it.

Usually the cause is from deleting a desktop icon, even though it is usually only a shortcut, it messes with the exe icon.
Case in point... After downloading Adobe reader it puts an icon on the desktop. Nobody wants that on their desktop so you delete it, and sometimes, not all the time it messes up the icon. There is an easy way to fix it but I am not a great command line person, never was.

two things i am not seeing here.

1. try repairing the icon cache.
2. did you create the desktop icons for the office programs then move the original icons from their location?
3. same thing with the word docs as in 2.

even though you should be able to send any item in your start menus programs group as a shortcut to the desktop, then rearrange the the start menu without effecting the desktop shortcuts some times the desktop icon(s) will get corrupted. i still want to see the screenshot i asked for.
