Missing space in C: how to recover ?

Hi Folks,

I am finding my laptop's C drive showing as full whereas when i checked the reality is different.

Total Disk Size:-39 GB
Files stored :-19 GB
Disk usage as Full .

I have installed a utility call TREESIZE to check the exact usage filewise then also same results.

I have tried all options disk clean up etc ,but nothing much has benefited me.

Plz help me in knowing how to recover the missing 20 GB space.

Awaiting for quick revert !!!

there is a option on windows that you have to type in cmmnd prompt this is called shadow storage this link should show you how

and also you might want to turn off system restore cause that eats up space too

when you go here follow to the letter you will gain atleast 10 gigs of space back

If you decide to take the advice of the prior poster, may I suggest that you delete the old restore points, but do make at least one new one. They are there for your protection in case of a problem. You could reduce the amount of space that the restore points are permitted to use.

You may also want to look into shadow copies and backup and restore.

well system restore for me is kinda useless i have backups and also the install disc im comfortable enough to just deal with it and do it over again never hurts to refresh equipment once in a while

but your point is valid cause not everyone has access to these iteams at a moments notice so i do agree with keeping a restore point and getting rid of previous one's it will help you maintain a better running system and you can basicly watch over the hard drive more deeply then before

Hi Guys i have done both the above mentioned solutions after that i was able to get 3 GB of space only .

I am still unable to identify where is my 20 GB space missing .I am using Windows 7 OS professional edition.

I have attached the C: report also.

Pls help me !!!

you can also select clean the c drive select inexing files and such and delete those

have you went through the c drive and gotten rid of folders you dont use anymore hidden files like videos ? if you only got back 3 gigs then there is something on there taking it up or you have some downloaded contenet that needs to be deleted web content

well i do see you are only useing 16 gigs so that does pose a issue maybe you just need to format or start with a bigger drive cause a 40 gig drive is kinda small anyways especially as much space windows displays it's using

I have already tried the Disk clean up/fragmenting option that you mean to say.

I have attached the report i generated from a utility can you view the pdf that i have attached hope it gives any idea ?

Moreover i keep all my downloaded content in D: and E: drives only program files ,drivers are kept in C: drive

In the treesize report, the Used space is shown as 36.1 gb but adding up the individual folders size gives only about 20gb.

My guess is its the hibernation file which is taking up space that treesize cant read.

Do you use hibernation? Try turning it off. Click Start button, type "cmd" without quotes, then click on the result. At the command prompt, type:

powercfg -h off

Hit Enter. This will disable hibernation and delete the hiberfil.sys.

Then run Treesize again or check in windows explorer.

After disabling hibernation there isnt much differnce just 2 GB increased ,

Treesize results attached ,Condition remains the same ,now free space showing as 5 GB still 15 GB is missing .

Pls help in resolving this mystery

In windows explorer-> folder options->View tab->hidden files and folders, click on "Show hidden files, folders..." and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Click on Apply, Ok.

Now run treesize.

Couple of more things you can try:

1) use spacemonger instead of treesize and see what it reports.
