missing system disk problem ?

got a strange problem, running 64bit pro, there are two sata hdd fitted when i unplug the disk that does not have the operating system on the system will not boot and states the system disk is missing. in the bios the correct disk is listed as the 1st boot device, if i plug the second disk back in it boots ok. got me puzzled, any ideas?

Bet you left the second HD connected while installing win 7. When you do the install puts a hidden 100 mb partition on the other disk for files, expansion, etc. without them win 7 cant boot

Just as zigzag said, but adding my own two cents here:

If the disk without the OS is higher than the disk with OS (like Channel 0 Master/Slave is higher than Channel 1 Master /Slave and inside Master/Slave, Master is higher than Slave), then not only did windows seven put that hidden 100 MB partition there, it also put your boot loader there!

If you try Easy BCD you'll be able to boot off the OS drive when you add the bootloader to your OS drive.
