Mixing RAM

I have 4GB of DDR3 Ram right now, and I'm thinking of adding another 4GB. I have this ram right now, but it is deactivated on the Newegg site.

Because I can't buy that ram anymore, can I mix it with this? Because, as far as I can tell, they are basically identical.

My advice is dont; nothing but problems. I have seen many cases where it looked ok on paper but it was still a problem

Hmm, unless you set the timings manually on both set of RAMs, it should be OK. they're the same Manufacturer, and the same model, only different Cas Latencies

I'd recommend to set them at 9-9-9-24 on both sets.

Although it looks like the set you already have works at 1.65V, and the new will be working at 1.35V, somebody please correct me if i'm wrong, BUT! if you undervolt your current RAM to 1.35V and set the timings to 9-9-9-24 in the BIOS of course, would be totally compatible with the new set the OP wants to buy? :huh:

Punkster may very well be right but I never recommend mixing and matching RAM. Your system will automatically (if they'll run together) default to the lower set.

It's my opinion in order to get the full benefit of more ram to always use the exact model and manufacture numbered Ram.

No no, i totally understand, i wouln't mix RAMs either, but since they are the same manufacturer, the same model (just different latencies) i thought it might be a viable solution for the OP given the fact that the RAMs he already have are Out of Stock and probably won't be in stock again

But totally agree with you, mixing RAMs, not my thing..

I guess the OP will have to find another retailer selling the RAMs or buy another set of RAMs:

Same thing but one's a 4GB kit (2 x 2GB) and the other one is an 8GB kit (2 x 4GB)

Another thing OP, OCZ stopped manufacturing RAM memory...

Found them, Beau. But at 111.04$.. i don't think that's a deal

With that money i'd buy a 2 x 4GB RAM from another manufacturer: IE, the one i suggested above and that's it, the OP would still have 2 slots extras, if he buys these ones, he'll use all the slots

Of course if the latencies are important for the OP, then i could find the CL7 from the same manufacturer, but they're a little more expensive that the ones i posted (CL9).

And that would still be a better deal than buying that set from Amazon :huh:

This. Just because Newegg is out, doesn't mean no one else has them. Check plenty of other places, and be safe by matching the memory.

This. i found them (check above posts) but at 112$ i don't think that's a deal. the OP is better off buying another set of RAMs which is cheaper and he could even buy an 8GB Kit (2 x 4GB) and he'll still have 2 available slots for another 8GB Kit making it 16GB RAM (totally overkill for an average-user, but you get my point )

I have mixed and matched RAM in computers at work for many many years with very few problems. I have also mixed memory at home without any issues. Personally speaking, if you can keep them the same...why not. But if you cannot, I think it should continue to work just fine in most cases.
