I bought a new copy of windows 7 not even a month ago. Shortly after that, my motherboard died, and I replaced it, keeping the same hard drive with the Windows 7 installation.

Now I am getting continual validation messages, and none of the options seem to work. The online validation fails because of "an unknown error." When I try "re-enter your product key," the validation fails. When I try to use the automatic phone validation, the pull-down list of phone numbers is blank. I downloaded "legitcheck" from the windows website, but when I run it, the "download" button is greyed out and inactive.

I opened a chat with a windows representative last night. I gave him my product key; he checked and said it was still valid. Yet I still get constant validation messages.

How can I solve this once and for all?

The major limitation of an OEM license is that it cannot be transferred between motherboards - it's locked to the first one on which it is activated.

If you're lucky, and get a friendly Activation operator on the day you try, you may be able to persuade them to allow activation on the new motherboard - otherwise, you're SOL.

Wait, do I have an OEM license? Like you would get bundled into a pre-made computer? I was under the impression that I was buying a regular copy of windows -- or don't they work that way anymore?

Yes - you have an OEM System Builder license, complete with COA sticker (I hope!)

There are a number of reasons the OEM License is a lot cheaper than the Full Retail license:
1) you only get 1 DVD for either 32-bit or 64-bit install, rather than 2 with the Full license
2) OEM System Builder licenses get no support from MS
3) OEM System Builder licenses are supposed to have a second System Builder License agreement on the outside of the package stating the restrictions of use/sale
4) OEM licenses are supposed ONLY to be installed on new computers.
5) and most important - OEM Licenses are restricted to use on the first computer on which they are activated. In MS terms this effectively means the first motherboard, unless you can show that any replacement was necessary because of hardware failure.
