So uh, I have a motorola surfboard sb5101 modem and I recently got windows 7 64 bit. I've been trying to get the modem to work with an usb cable but the driver apparently doesn't work with 64 bit operating systems. I know using an ethernet cable would be a lot easier but I need to use both because I have two computers on my network and in order to play some games like starcraft together with my brother without any extrememe lag I would need the second cable for the second ip address.

So is there anyway that I would be able to make this work? I can't seem to find any driver downloads for 64 bit and all the help threads I've seen were ones where people only needed to use just the ethernet cable. Any kind of solution would be helpful, like contacting shaw for an new modem, buying one myself? (dunno if thats possible), or anything. Especially with starcraft 2 coming, it would suck if I couldn't play online with my bro

Hook it up by USB to your computer. Then go into the device manager and right click on it. Properties. Details tab. Change dropdown to hardware ids. Copy and paste the results here. I'll see if I can find something for you.

This driver is from 2004! I'm pretty sure that it's not for 64 bit.

Sometimes you just can't avoid having to upgrade your hardware in order to use a new OS. I know you don't want or need to hear this, but It is most likely the only way you may have to go. If torrentg can't write a uasable file for you.

If you connect via ethernet, buy a new modem.

so you mean if mine isn't wireless right? I'm planning to get a new router too in a few days for different reasons, and probably also a wireless card

Get a router with a built in modem and support for Gigabit Ethernet, are you putting in a pci wireless card? If so, look for wireless N support.

Your wireless router should manage all the settings, along with 7. What do you mean about a second IP?

Will you be going for an internal wireless n card or an external one?

Ahhh, choose a wireless modem with support for gigabit networking, then use ethernet for LAN gaming. 7 will do it. You should also be able to have wireless and ethernet at the same time. Choose a wireless n card for pci-Express x1 if you can. What motherboard slots do you have free? You also need to make sure nothing is blocking something else.

I dont mean LAN gaming. I want to play online as in battle.net. the thing is right now that when I host a game and my bro joins and other people joins, the game gets extremely laggy

Edit: my motherboard I'm pretty sure has the slot open, the graphic hard is a bit huge though

Lagginess depends on your ISP and ping times. What GPU?

I have high speed internet with shaw, running a Core i5 with a Radoen 5850. But its not about the my specs. The problem is that the game cannot handle two people connecting to it on the same ip. So we need an second ip and shaw gives us the option to do that by connecting a usb cable from my modem to my computer. But the thing is that the driver for that usb connection is too old for a 64 bit OS and there are no updates for it
