Modify Taskbar Left/Right-Click Behavior

For a program with only 1 open window, I want to be able to show the Thumbnail Preview for that window by either:

(a) Left-clicking on the task bar icon

or

(b) Right-clicking on the task bar icon

That's not the default behavior in Windows...

Regardless of how many taskbar buttons there are currently, hovering over any of them should automatically give you the thumbnail preview. Clicking on any of them should either open a minimized window or bring it to the front if already open - nothing else.

You misunderstand - what you described above as the current behavior is not how it should be. So I'm wondering why it is this way for you...

You shouldn't have to click the tackbar icons to see a thumbnail preview. Hover you cursor over one and those previews will pop-up with not click.

If I understand you correctly you are trying to disable the thumb nail when hovering over the icons on the task bar. If that is correct I know of no way of doing that. Don't hover over the icon just click on it and things will just open.

You do not understand me correctly.

Seeing this is going nowhere, could you please explain why you would like to change the default behavior? I mean, both left and right click already have very important functions. What's wrong with the defaults: mouse-over = preview, left click = restore <> minimize, right click = context menu (jump list).

I'm of course not completely 100% sure about this but I think this kind of essential basic functions of Windows can not be changed. Especially when you talk about a program with only 1 open window, I really can see no way to separate the behavior from a program with two or more windows.

Incorrect, 7 Taskbar Tweaker can change some these, but not in the way I am looking for.

You can disable the thumbnail preview completely. But as Kari and Britton explained, it's pretty much impossible to make it do what you want. It's just not designed to work that way.

Edit: I had a look at the Taskbar Tweaker app you mentioned - still, to have the taskbar perform different functions depending on how many taskbar buttons are actually there would be pretty difficult to implement. Maybe ask the author of this program and ask him what he thinks?

Quite often it matters, we have solved a lot of issues here after understanding why user wants something special. Understanding an issue is important.
