Modular PSU - really neat

I think I made a pun.

When I upgraded my on-chip video to video card I went ahead and upgraded the PSU. After reviewing PSUs I decided on the Seasonic S12II 520 Bronze for $65 plus $9.65 shipping. As I looked further I saw the modular version of said PSU (M12II) for $80 (free shipping) which is instant $20 off at Newegg. Since it's only $5.35 more than the S12II I had to be crazy not to get the M12II.

When I got it I saw the benefit where I got 7 add-on cables and I only needed one for the drives. For my miniATX case it was a big plus for cooling.

I thought I'd let you guys know about this PSU if you're looking for one. The Seasonic brand is very popular for good builds and that the modular model is a bargain to the wired model.

I only use and recommend (fully) modular power supplies to my clients. As you have found out, it eliminates the clutter of the unused cables/connectors. This can also help internal air flow in some cases.

The corsair modular 600W isnt quite fully modular becouse they come with non modular motherboard power and cpu power. but obiously you dont need them to be modular anyway. (did say before editing (but obiously you dont need them anyway. well. YEAH thats a kinda important powercable right there)

I agree modular, or even semi-modular (you are going to use the 24 and 4or 8 pin cable anyway so it doesn't need to be modular), is the best way to go, even if one has to pay as much as $20 or more to get it. Rarely does anyone need all the cables on a PSU so you can just use the ones you need, cutting down on clutter and improving airflow. Also, it's much easier to customize the cables on modular PSUs.

Exactly. The power cable and the cpu cable(s) are always needed so they're wired in. I kinda expected that and the rest can be detachable. When I pulled my Corsair CX430 PSU I realized the clutter, too many cables I'll never need and I'm clipping ties.

I can say that from now on all my PSUs are going to be modular. Once you get a taste of it you'll never look back.

The Seasonic are excellent buys now, their prices have come down while at the same time their quality has gotten even better. They are on the top of their game: the build quality, design, components, and voltage regulation are all top notch. You made a good choice.

Thanks, a lot of builders told me Seasonic or XFX, nothing else. Of course there's other brands that was made by Seasonic for them and I'm guessing XFX does too.

I agree. Modular is sooo much better. even just installing the components is easier since you don't have all the cables at once hanging all over the place. just install them individually as you go. Route the cables to where they should be and install the next one.... After having a modular PSU in my desktop rig, I will never go back

Some of the really nice Corsair's are manufactured by SeaSonic...which is why they are so highly regarded. I've not had any experience with XFX, but the higher end Antec power supplies are rock solid in my book.
