A week ago a friend gave me a generic tower with:
ECS K7S5A board,
Trident Blade 3D 9880 graphic card
40GB western Digital HD
Toshiba SD-M1202 DVD ROM
LG GSA-H55N DVD re-writer
Epson SD-800 duel floppy disk Drive (3.5" and 5.25")
Creative labs/ensoniq 6000739 sound card
512MB of DDR memory
Don't know the processor speed and type
Power supply says made in 2002, so I'll have to guess the computer was made around that time and has windows XP installed.

When I got it, it would not turn on (power connections to all drives were disconnected), now she turns on (all drives, fans (2) and mouse light up) but it won't turn on the monitor (monitor works on my other tower). I hear a few beeps when powered up (three I believe), could the graphics card be bad or do you think it's something else. Just want to use it to surf the net maybe burn cd/dvd's unless what's in there is useless, then I'll gut it out and use it for something else. but for now I would like to see it turn on the monitor and show the set up screen.

In the picture below I disconnected the floppy drive because it was making some noise and I won't ever use it.

To be more definitive, we need to know the actual beep code. If it was three beeps, it indicates a memory test failure. This test occurs before the video test. Try removing the memory module(s) and re-seat. Also make sure all the power supply connections are made to the motherboard..

Looking at the MS answer there are three reasons for this. Unmountable Boot Volume
Damaged cable (replace cable)
Incorrect BIOS settings (load Failsafe settings)
Damaged file system (Boot from the windows XP disk)

+1 to Roy for getting back before I did. And ditto what he says. Could be a loose disk cable. Hopefully, the drive is ok. Bringing an old system back to life is always one step at a time. It might be a good idea to replace the motherboard battery too, if you haven't already, since it's needed to store all the CMOS settings. A lot of those old power supplies don't have standby power when the system is shutdown.

Ya, I do need to replace the battery, a prompt came up for it, plus I pulled it out and it shows 0 volts. So that will be my next step. Also, how do you load the 'Fail-Safe' default settings?

BTW fellas. I really do appreciate your help.

Finding the load failsafe defaults should be easy. Google your mobo. If you need more help on loading the failsafe defaults post back. To get into your bios press del straight after turning it on.
