The HDTV /Monitor that I'm setting up (LG M237WD) comes with a CD with the manual and driver, but it will not autorun. Windows offers to open it in a window, but when going to the driver folder, there are 3 files...M237.cat, M237.lcm and M237.inf. Going to the install option on the inf's context menu produces an error, saying that it can't be installed by this method. Going to the driver properties in the DM and selecting update and browsing to the driver folder, produces an error saying that the best driver is already installed.

I suspect that the next step would be to uninstall/install it in Safe Mode, but since it is already using the proper resolution and refresh rate, I'm wondering if there is really a need to bother. Would there be any difference between the manufacturer's driver and the native driver...other than possibly getting a better icon displaying in Devices and Printers?

In most cases, the default driver is sufficient. I have a HANNspree 23" monitor, and yes, there is a driver file for it. Any difference? Nope, just that Windows 7 now says it is a HANNspree monitor.

If the resolution and refresh rate are working for you, I don't see any advantage to loading in whatever it provides (other than the icon).

Thanks, but Windows already recognizes the brand and model with just the native driver. The only thing that I see lacking is that as I said, the icon in Printers And Drivers is only a generic one, though it is properly labeled. In the Device Manager, it only lists a generic monitor also, but these are too insignificant to worry about.

This can be done ..

select your monitor in the Device Manager and go to 'update driver' ..
then select 'Browse my computer for driver software' ..
then 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
select 'Have Disk' .. and navigate to where the .inf is and select it.

As you say , there is no real advantage to doing this , but at least Device Manager will now list your monitor properly! .. well it did for my LG 2053 anyway!!
